Closing Bell | U.S. Markets Decline, Tesla Drops Over 5%, NVIDIA Falls Nearly 3%

Market Watcher2025-02-04

On February 3, 2025, U.S. stock markets closed with significant declines. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.28%, the NASDAQ dropped by 1.20%, and the S&P 500 decreased by 0.76%.

In sector performance, the silver and gold mining stocks showed gains, with the silver sector rising by 1.82% and the gold sector increasing by 1.80%. Notable gainers included Pan American Silver up 2.80% and Anglogold Ashanti up 3.28%. Conversely, the semiconductor sector experienced a sharp decline, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing falling by 4.55% and Advanced Micro Devices down 1.45%.

NVIDIA saw a decline of 2.84%. The Trump Administration's announced tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China have impacted the auto and tech supply chains. Despite the belief that the auto sector can adjust to the tariffs, the tech sector, including chip companies like NVIDIA, experienced declines due to market chaos.

Alphabet and Alphabet both fell by 1.44% and 1.37%, respectively. The parent company of Google is set to announce its fourth-quarter earnings, with analysts projecting a 30% year-over-year increase in earnings per share. However, concerns about foreign exchange headwinds and a potential slowdown in Cloud revenue have impacted the stock.

Meta Platforms Inc. rose by 1.20%. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been selling common stocks of Meta Platforms since December 3, 2024, reducing his shareholding by approximately $785 million.

Tesla Motors dropped by 5.17%. The stock has experienced a significant decline due to concerns over tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products, leading to a risk selloff in the auto and auto-parts industries. Despite being the least exposed among auto players to these tariffs, Tesla's stock fell more than 6% and is poised to close at its lowest in one month.

General Motors fell by 3.15%. The imposition of 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada by President Donald Trump has led to a decline in car stocks, with higher costs and potential supply-chain issues expected to increase volatility for investors.
