China has set a target of NEVs accounting for 20% of new vehicles sold by 2025.</p><p><b>Why It's Important:</b>In an anticipatory move,<b>Nio, Inc.</b> announced in early December if a customer preorders a vehicle with a deposit before midnight on Dec. 31, 2021 and takes delivery before March 31, 2022, it will absorb the difference between the old subsidy and the new subsidy, according to CnEVPost.</p><p>Nio can also benefit from another provision laid out by the government. China's NEV subsidy policy dictates that models with a pre-subsidy price of over 300,000 yuan ($47,200) are not eligible for subsidies, except those that support battery swapping, CnEVPost said in another report.</p><p>All of Nio's current models are priced above 300,000 yuan before subsidies, although the EV maker is speculated to be working on a mass market model under a different brand name.The company reportedly does not set different subsidies for different models, but rather base them on the model's battery pack.</p><p>Individual consumers are eligible to receive a subsidy of 11,340 yuan for a model with a standard 75 kilowatt-hour battery pack, and 12,600 yuan for a 100 kWh battery pack, the report said, citing the company's latest subsidy package. Companies purchasing a Nio vehicle get 70% of the amount available to individual consumers, according to the report.</p><p>Nio's domestic rival <b>XPeng, Inc.</b> is also looking to scale back purchase benefits to customers by about half, keeping in mind the subsidy cut, CnEVPost reported, citing local media outlet Auto-time. This is applicable to all theXPeng'sthree models currently on the market, namely the G3i, P5 and P7.</p><p><b>Tesla, Inc.</b>, meanwhile, is continuing with a price hike spree amid the subsidy cut taking effect in China.</p><p>Tesla announced Friday it is raising prices of its made-in-China, or MIC, Model 3 vehicles to 265,652 yuan after subsidy, up 10,000 yuan or 3.9%, according to South China Morning Post. As A As recently as late November, the company instituted a price increase of 4,752 yuan.</p><p>The price of the Model Y SUV was also hiked by 7.5% to 301,840 yuan, the report added. It rebranded to reflect its increasing diversification away from merchant services and into other innovative segments, including blockchain technology.</p><p>But despite this new direction, Block hasn't abandoned its most profitable segments, which are centered around payment services. For businesses, Block provides hardware that allows merchants to process credit card purchases in-store, in addition to loans and other services. And on the consumer side, Block's CashApp serves as an alternative to bank accounts for its 40 million monthly users, with instant peer-to-peer money transfers, and even a stock and cryptocurrency investing platform.</p><p>Excluding <b>Bitcoin</b>, Block's various segments have delivered a gross profit margin of 55% so far in 2021. That's compared to just 2% for the Bitcoin segment, which is mostly derived from CashApp users transacting in the cryptocurrency.</p><p>Block's stock has been crushed recently amid the tech sell-off, but there's plenty for investors to be excited about. The company is acquiring buy now, pay later giant <b>Afterpay</b>, which will allow consumers to finance small purchases through CashApp, providing a potentially enormous boost for Block's merchants within the ecosystem.</p><p>Analysts expect Block to generate $17.6 billion in revenue by the close of 2021, placing the stock at a price-to-sales multiple around 4.4. It's a significant discount to just two months ago, and since the company is now consistently profitable, it certainly warrants consideration for long-term investors -- especially given how aggressively Block is growing its umbrella of businesses.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7292cadd6cd32ea55e1d537555082c94\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p><h2>2. Affirm Holdings: Down 37%</h2><p><b>Affirm Holdings </b>(NASDAQ:AFRM) is the world's largest stand-alone buy now, pay later company even despite the recent sell-off. It trailed Afterpay for the last few years, and when that company was acquired by Block, it looked as though Affirm was being left in the dust. However, in a spectacular counterpunch, Affirm recently secured a deal with <b>Amazon</b>, the world's largest e-commerce company.</p><p>Affirm will be featured in the checkout of Amazon's online platform. When customers are making a purchase, they'll have the option to finance it rather than paying with their own money. When the deal was announced in August it ignited a rally in Affirm's stock from $70 to $176, eclipsing Afterpay's $29 billion deal with Block in the process.</p><p>Unsurprisingly, Amazon offers Affirm enormous growth in users and gross merchandise value (GMV). Combined with Affirm's existing deal with <b>Shopify</b>, it now has a $600 billion-per-year opportunity in front of it. That's a 7,000% increase on the GMV it processed in fiscal 2021, which ended on June 30.</p><p>Affirm is also expanding beyond standard integrations with merchants' online stores, into physical cards for consumers to use buy now, pay later's short-term financing anywhere they like.</p><p>The steep correction in Affirm's stock presents a strong long-term opportunity for investors, given its innovative approach to consumer finance, and the potential offered by its deals with Amazon and Shopify.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6718cd8ef143a94a5336e30dcb88d6fd\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"465\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p><h2>3. It's <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the best performers of 2021, with a 280% year-to-date return, even after accounting for the recent 60% collapse in its stock. At one point in October, Upstart had gained over 800% for the year with a price of $401, before tumbling to the $155 it trades at today.</p><p>The company has leveraged artificial intelligence to transform the way banks assess potential loans. Upstart's goal is to use its technology to unseat the decades-old FICO credit scoring system, by analyzing over 1,000 different data points to gain a more comprehensive perspective of potential borrowers. So far it's working exceptionally well, with Upstart-originated loans resulting in 75% fewer defaults for the same approval rate.</p><p>The company began in unsecured lending before entering its largest market yet, secured vehicle loans. It has built an impressive network of car dealerships and it has done so quickly through its acquisition of Prodigy, a car sales software platform now known as Upstart Auto Retail. In the recent third quarter, it had 291 dealers using the new sales and loan origination service, up 219% from the same period last year.</p><p>Since Upstart is a loan originator, it doesn't lend any money itself and therefore carries almost no credit risk. It earns a fee when its banking partners write a loan using its algorithm, and also sells its software to institutions that want to integrate it into their application processes.</p><p>At the beginning of 2021, Upstart estimated it would generate $500 million in revenue for the year. The company processed payments totaling $310 billion in the third quarter, and only around $9 billion originated on eBay.</p>\n<p>Venmo payments processed grew 36% year over year to $60 billion, and this revenue stream could accelerate. In 2022, <b>Amazon</b> customers will be able to check out using their Venmo accounts.</p>\n<p>Unlike <b>Affirm</b> and similar BNPL start-ups that are still bleeding money, PayPal is a strongly profitable business that generated around $5 billion in free cash flow over the past year. The consensus price target at the moment suggests a 56% gain once the rest of the stock market sees the company's future in a positive light again.</p>\n<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's recent authorization of <b>Pfizer</b>'s anti-coronavirus pill is good news for America, but not so great for Zoom's already stalling growth trajectory. Luckily, Zoom is already strongly profitable and will likely remain so once the pandemic finally ends.</p>\n<p>The company's increasingly popular, cloud-based private phone network, Zoom Phone, makes it a lot easier for businesses to allow their employees to work remotely. Instead of reaching a predicted range between $585 million and $597 million, third-quarter billings came in at just $565 million.</p>\n<p>Despite slightly lowered expectations, DocuSign has what it takes to bounce back in 2022 and continue performing for years to come. Recognized revenue soared 42% year over year to $545 million, and cash generated by operating activities jumped 84% to $104 million.</p>\n<p>New business isn't beating a path to DocuSign's door as it did during the strictest pandemic-fueled lockdowns, but it doesn't look like customers are jumping to competing services either. In early 2020, Apple and Broadcom reached a $15 billion supply agreement for wireless components that ends in 2023. Apple accounts for about 20% of Broadcom’s sales, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Skyworks is even more dependent on Apple, which makes up nearly 60% of its revenue, the data shows.</p>\n<p>Irvine -- located in Orange County, south of Los Angeles -- is also home to wireless chip design offices for NXP Semiconductors NV, another company Apple could hire engineers from. Apple currently relies on NXP’s near-field-communication chips for mobile payments.</p>\n<p>The office also is near the University of California at Irvine, which is known for its engineering programs.</p>\n<p>Apple will emerge from the pandemic in a less centralized form. While Cupertino remains the heart of the company, it has turned San Diego into a bigger hub. Apple has added headcount and expanded hiring there beyond chips to smart home technology, displays and software.</p>\n<p>It’s also expanding in Los Angeles, hiring employees to work on Apple TV+ and other digital services. unemployment claims near 2019 levels while job openings hold near record highs.</p>\n<p>The Labor Department released its jobless claims report on Wednesday, a day earlier than usual due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Here were the main metrics from the print, compared to consensus estimates compiled by Bloomberg:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><p><b>Initial unemployment claims, week ended November 20:</b>199,000 vs. 260,000 expected and 268,000 during prior week</p></li>\n <li><p><b>Continuing claims, week ended November 13:</b>2.049 million vs. 2.033 million expected and 2.080 million during prior week</p></li>\n</ul>\n<p>The total number of new weekly filings fell to a fresh virus-era low for a seventh straight week. During the comparable week last year, initial filings came at well over 700,000. Claims also fell below their 2019 weekly average of approximately 220,000.</p>\n<p>Continuing claims for regular state unemployment benefits have also drawn closer to pre-virus levels. After coming in at the lowest level since March 2020 last week, continuing claims also neared their 2019 average rate of about 1.7 million per week.</p>\n<p>And if this week's jobless claims report comes in as expected with further improvement in both new and continuing claims, it would also bode well for November's monthly jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This week's claims report coincides with the survey week for that data, which is due for release next week. Consensus economists expect that report to show non-farm payrolls rose by half a million in November, with the unemployment rate ticking down to 4.5% from 4.6% in October.</p>\n<p>The past couple months' worth of jobless claims reports have offered just one look at a labor market that has grown increasingly tight as the economic recovery progressed. Though the labor force participation rate has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, the number of those rendered newly unemployed has fallen precipitously, with many employers incentivized to keep their current workforces as job openings and labor shortages across industries remain elevated. Job openings werelast reported at 10.4 million as of the end of September, with this sum dipping only slightly from July's record high of more than 11 million.</p>\n<p>Monetary policymakers have been dealt the delicate task of further stoking employment growth while keeping inflation from running too hot for too long. This article will discuss why that may not be such a good thing.</p>\n<p>The First-Mover Fallacy</p>\n<p>Oftentimes, the first-mover in a major new market is identified as said market’s future leader. It’s easy to see why, as they’re often associated with the market that they’ve created. Yet, think web browser and you probably think of Alphabet’s (GOOG) Google Chrome. Think of email, you’re again most likely going to think of a Google product -- this time Gmail. Social media? Facebook (FB). Cell phone? iPhone. You get the idea. What’s one thing all of these different products have in common? None of them were the first to market. Yet, despite this, they’ve all become the pinnacle of each of their respective markets.</p>\n<p>So, the big question is “Why?” Why are none of these transformative first-movers the leaders of their industry? Well, there’s not really one blanket answer.A 2005 publication to The Harvard Business Review discusses the idea of this fallacy.</p>\n<blockquote>\n “But for every academic study proving that first-mover advantages exist, there is a study proving they do not. While some well-known first-movers, such as Gillette in safety razors and Sony in personal stereos, have enjoyed considerable success, others, such as Xerox in fax machines and eToys in Internet retailing, have failed. We have found that the differences in outcome are not random—that first-mover status can confer advantages, but it does not do so categorically. Much depends on the circumstances in which it is sought.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>I find this last sentence to be particularly powerful, as every industry is vastly different and allows for alternate outcomes. There will always be some level of unpredictability, dumb luck if you will, though The Harvard Business Review identified two factors that seem to reliably indicate whether or not the first-mover advantage will last. “The pace at which the technology of the product in question is evolving and the pace at which the market for that product is expanding” are these two critical factors.</p>\n<p>The rate of innovation in the EV sector is currently one of the most impressive global efforts I’ve ever seen, as is the rate at which the market is expanding.Since 2015, global sales of EVs have grown at an average rate of 50%. Yet, this is heating up. Global EV sales in 2021are expected to rise 83% over last year, increasing the rate of adoption as more options flood the market. In order for first-movers to be successful, there needs to be substantial interest in the market. This plays into Tesla’s hands. However, the extreme level of growth in the market necessitates more competition. This opens the door for others to combat Tesla.</p>\n<p>Let’s come back to the idea of rapid innovation as well. Companies likeNano One(OTCPK:NNOMF) andSES(IVAN), both of which I’ve covered, are looking to introduce industry-shifting innovations. They’re not alone either. CATL, a Chinese battery producer, is on the verge of becoming the country’s second-largest company. CATL is on pace to spend nearly $1 billion on R&D this year, up 115% over the first half of last year. In this market of rapid innovation, it is nigh on impossible for any one company to stay at the forefront.</p>\n<p>The EV industry has failed what The Harvard Business review deemed the two most important litmus tests in determining whether a first-mover truly has any advantage. Not great news for the incumbent leader, Tesla. Though, I argue that there is more that can bring down the power of a first-mover. Complacency can create opportunities for others to thrive. In the next section, I will discuss how Tesla’s complacency, as well as a few other factors, mean that there are more reasons than a highly innovative and quickly-growing market for Tesla to fall.</p>\n<p>Where Tesla’s Faltering</p>\n<p>I think that there’s no question Lucid owes a majority of its early success to Tesla. Tesla essentially created the market for Lucid and, maybe even more importantly, got investors to pay attention to them. All of that attention allowed Lucid Motors to raise $4.4 billion in its SPAC merger with Churchill Capital. That money was enough for Lucid to bring the Air to market, continue development work on its SUV, and expand its production footprint. That’s something that Tesla never had and will be immensely powerful for Lucid Motors. Now, I’m not saying that Lucid has an easy road to mass production, far from it, but there’s no question that it’s easier than Tesla’s was. This is the first stage in which Lucid is benefiting from Tesla’s prior struggles.</p>\n<p>Though, a good start means nothing if the company can’t build on it. This is where I believe that Tesla is simply holding the door open for Lucid Motors. Tesla has seemingly become lazy and no longer has that fire to continue innovating. I can’t say I blame them, they’ve got several years on their closest competition and their cars are some of the best in the category. Well, perhaps before the Air came to market.</p>\n<p>The quality control issues that plagued Tesla in its early days were an issue, though forgivable given the company’s tumultuous path to production. Yet, there are still a number of reports concerning poor build quality. These issues are even present on the company’s $130,000 Model S Plaid. At this point, these issues are inexcusable. Especially on a $130,000 car. Lucid has worked hard to make sure it avoided making the same mistakes, even delaying initial production to do so, and it’s paid off. We’ll have to wait and see if a larger sample size produces the same result but, so far, the quality of the Air looks to be on par with its luxury price tag.</p>\n<p>The other major area that Tesla seems to be lacking in is powertrain development. Having just released a car that goes 0-60 in less than two seconds, this may seem like a bit of an unjustified claim. But that’s not the only way to measure the capability of a powertrain. In an older article, I reviewed the quality of Lucid’s core product offering. That article focused on its powertrain efficiency. The Air is capable of up to 520 miles of range, at an efficiency of 4.64 miles/kWh (the electric equivalent to miles/gallon). Granted, this is for the company’s Grand Touring trim,which costs a whopping $139,000. The base version of the Air, which costs $77,400, has an efficiency of 5.41 miles/kWh, traveling 406 miles on a single charge (using an estimated battery size of75 kWh). Tesla’s Long Range Model S, which travels412 miles on a single charge, is Tesla’s most efficient vehicle with an efficiency of 4.12 miles/kWh. I’m not going to get into the specifics on how this was achieved, as this was all explained in that previous article. For our purposes here, it’s just important to understand that it <i>was</i> done.</p>\n<p>Now, it’s easy to point to Tesla’s batteries and say that they’re the most advanced in the world. I wouldn’t argue with you there, though I’m not sure that’ll be the case for very long. It’s already becoming far less obvious than it once was, as improvements become increasingly more iterative and less significant. Essentially, Tesla’s stuck making small incremental changes while its competitors, which once were far behind, have had the chance to catch up. The company hopes that its new 4680 cells will give it the next big leap, but I think they’re moving in the wrong direction. Trying to fit a bunch of cylinders in a rectangular container is always going to be inefficient. Hence, from a volumetric density perspective, the prismatic cell architecture is superior. In vehicles, where space is a premium, volumetric density is a critical performance benchmark. Though, I think that this speaks to a larger issue in Tesla’s battery cell development. Ina previous article, I discussed how Tesla’s batteries are becoming a liability. The company’s unwillingness to consider lithium metal batteries as the next generation of lithium-ion batteries could see the company’s battery advantage completely erode by the end of the decade.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d9f51e943a3340831639c2db1513cc4a\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"486\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source:C&EN</span></p>\n<p>The fact that Lucid isn’t reliant upon their own battery technology means that it is far more nimble during this time of significant battery iteration. As noted in the above section, the EV industry is likely to be driven by a series of disruptive technologies through the foreseeable future, and a company that is easily able to consistently pivot to these disruptive technologies has a better chance of staying on top of the market. To give Tesla credit, its cells are some of the best on the market. However, it’s hard to stay at the top of two different fields, car design and battery design, and the desire to do so often results in failure. The fact that Lucid walloped Tesla in drivetrain efficiency speaks to the fact that Tesla is no longer engineering the best electric vehicles and all signs point to Tesla’s battery advantage dwindling.</p>\n<p>Investor Takeaway</p>\n<p>Look, I don’t think that Tesla, or Lucid Motors for that matter, should be valued close to where they are today but the fact of the matter is that they are. If Lucid will ultimately be the stronger of the two, take that as you will. I won’t pretend that I can predict the flow of the market with companies like Tesla and Lucid, which trade so far removed from any fundamentals, but I do think that time will prove that Lucid is the better of the two companies.</p>\n<p>Ignoring share prices, Lucid Motors is gearing up for some pretty extreme growth. The company has a lot of cash on hand and is using it to invest in growing its production and product offerings. Similar to Tesla, Lucid plans to introduce mass-market vehicles after its niche offerings begin generating capital and brand awareness. As the disclosure below notes, I own shares of Lucid Motors. This may seem strange, as I just said that their fundamentals don’t come close to justifying their valuation. Though, when shares were under $20, it was far more appealing.
