The company, or rather the SPAC it merged with known as Altimeter Growth Corp, debuted its IPO last Thursday at a price of $13.05, achieving a valuation of nearly $40 billion and making it one of the largest IPOs of the year. But as CNN reported, the company's valuation declined by 21%. As of the time of writing Monday morning, Grab currently has a share price of $8.99, giving it a market cap of around $35 billion.
\n
Company president Ming Maa put a brave face on this initial result, telling Fortune that Southeast Asia is on the cusp of a digital revolution and that he believes Grab can grow rapidly and become profitable. But when one looks at Grab's financial numbers and prospects, there are many reasons to be very concerned about this company's future. Grab could very well become another Uber(NYSE:UBER), which after its recent fall is now trading below its IPO price of 2.5 years ago.
\n
The Company Problem
\n
Grab is at its core a ridesharing company and debuted as a taxi app in Malaysia in 2012. But like Uber, it aims to be so much more. The company states in its prospectus that:
\n
\n \"We enable millions of people each day to access driver- and merchant-partners to order food or groceries, send packages, hail a ride or taxi, pay for online purchases or access services such as lending, insurance, wealth management and telemedicine.\"\n
\n
It operates across eight countries in the Southeast Asian region.
\n
At its core, Grab has three main businesses. Its first and most important is ride-hailing, which connects five million \"driver-partners\" with customers. Second, it focuses on food delivery, whether from restaurants or from grocery stores. Finally, Grab has begun focusing on financial services, which includes GrabPay, GrabInsure, and GrabFinance among others. GrabPay is a digital payments solution, GrabInsure offers a variety of insurance, including critical illness insurance and travel insurance, and GrabFinance provides access to loans.
\n
In short, Grab is offering a wide range of services and products to a region which is rapidly growing and becoming more affluent. Despite going public in the US, Grab is primarily focused with no plans to expand outside the region. Southeast Asia has been badly hit by COVID, and worries about the omicron variant could further decrease economic growth forecasts.
\n
But the region has plenty of potential, in terms of digital growth and a wealthier population. Grab expects the \"total addressable market to grow from approximately $52 billion in 2020 to more than $180 billion by 2025.\"
\n
The problem is that, while Grab's potential is high, it also faces intense competition in all these fields. This is especially so in the financial services sector, where Apple(NASDAQ:AAPL)and Google Pay(NASDAQ:GOOGL)(NASDAQ:GOOG)have become active recently. Grab does not have any distinguishing moat which uniquely distinguishes itself from its competitors. And as we have seen with Uber, competition means that ridesharing companies are forced to offer cutthroat rates and discounts, impacting their financial numbers and upsetting their workers.
\n
The Financial Problem
\n
Those discounts and cutthroat rates will be a further problem given Grab's financial situation. The good news is that Grab grew dramatically in over the past year. It reported a revenue of $396 million in the first half of 2021, a 406% growth compared to the same period in 2020.
\n
But while the revenue growth is impressive, Grab does not have a history of sustained revenue growth. The fact that it reported a revenue of$157 million for the 2021 third quarter, down 9% year to year thanks to increasing COVID restrictions, should further worry investors about whether Grab can maintain such high growth in the face of tough competition.
\n
Furthermore, its profitability numbers are awful. While tech companies losing money is nothing unusual, Grab did not even make a gross profit in the first half of 2021, with a cost of revenue of $507 million. Its total net loss was $1.4 billion over that timeframe.
\n
Grab wants to use a figure called adjusted EBITDA, which shows that its earnings improved from a loss of $550 million in the first half of 2020 to a loss of $325 million in 2021. But even if we are to accept this, we are once again looking at a lack of a history of sustained profitability growth. As Uber and Lyft (NASDAQ:LYFT) show, it is not easy to assume that a ridesharing company can become profitable anytime soon.
\n
Finally, there is the matter of Grab's $35 billion valuation. Grab had $14 billion in total liabilities and $3.6 billion in cash as of June 30, 2021. This gives the company an enterprise value of about $45 billion. If we extrapolate Grab's 2021 first half revenue over the entire year, that gives the company a ludicrous EV/revenue ratio of 56.8. Even this number could be higher, given that its second half revenue probably will not reach its first half, given its disappointing third quarter numbers.
\n
By contrast, Uber has an EV/revenue of about 5. While Uber is of course a far more established company, Grab's lower valuation is still ridiculously high even by the standards of a tech company.
\n
The Final Problem
\n
Ridesharing companies have not been good investments so far, with Uber and Lyft both falling below their IPO price. But even those companies, warts and all, are still much better investments than Grab. Whether we look at its outsized valuation, its recent drop in revenue, or the competitive nature of its markets, there is little reason to seriously consider this IPO. While it has major potential should things go well, this is already baked into the price. Investors should not even remotely consider this IPO.
","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The Grab IPO's Many, Many Problems
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nThe Grab IPO's Many, Many Problems\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-12-08 11:12 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nSoutheast Asian company Grab launched its public debut last week, but the price drastically fell, and it currently has a market cap of about $35 billion.\nGrab is competing in a rich market ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"GRAB":"Grab Holdings"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4473779-grab-stock-ipo-many-problems","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5a36db9d73b4222bc376d24ccc48c8a4","article_id":"1115551422","content_text":"Summary\n\nSoutheast Asian company Grab launched its public debut last week, but the price drastically fell, and it currently has a market cap of about $35 billion.\nGrab is competing in a rich market and offers a wide range of services, but faces intense competition on multiple fronts from larger companies.\nGrab’s revenue is growing rapidly, but it lacks a sustained history, and its profitability and valuation numbers need significant improvement.\nGiven the above factors, investors should not consider this IPO.\n\nThe past few days have not gone well for southeast Asian company Grab(NASDAQ:GRAB). October’s 6.2% increase was the hottest the CPI has run in more than 30 years, and this past week Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell finally ditched “transitory” when discussing inflation before the Senate Banking Committee.\nThe University of Michigan releases its Consumer Sentiment index for December. That's slightly better than the average stock market return over the last 50 years of nearly 11%.
\n
Many companies have a long history of beating the market. Since its inception, the renewable energy producer has generated an annualized total return of 19%. The company had done that by investing billions of dollars into expanding its renewable energy portfolio. That has powered more than 10% annual growth in its cash flow per share, supporting 6% annual dividend increases over the last decade.
\n
However, Brookfield's best days appear to lie ahead. The global economy needs to invest trillions of dollars to decarbonize the energy sector over the next 30 years. That should enable Brookfield to continue to invest in expanding its renewable energy portfolio.
\n
The company currently has 36 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy projects in development. Over the last decade alone, the REIT spent $31 billion on acquisitions and capital expenditures (capex), powering 9% annual dividend growth since 2014.
\n
The company still sees significant investment opportunities ahead. Crown Castle noted that the telecom industry's rollout of 5G networks represents a decade-long investment cycle. Meanwhile, some see a 100-year data infrastructure upgrade investment opportunity to support the digital economy. Because of that, Crown Castle has a lot of growth ahead of it, which should drive continued strong returns.
\n
Crown Castle expects to grow its 3.2%-yielding dividend at a 7% to 8% annual rate in the near term. In addition to tried-and-true technologies like wind and solar, NextEra is a leader in emerging technologies, including battery storage and green hydrogen. (U) is uniquely positioned to monetize the metaverse megatrend with its leading game engine and Weta Digital acquisition. The rise of the metaverse should generate new revenue streams for the company to build digital infrastructure beyond the gaming vertical. In addition, Unity is also well positioned to participate in the NFT economy. Although the stock's high valuation may keep some investors on the sideline, investors should keep a close eye on this highly differentiated company.
\n
Opportunity in the metaverse is the main topic we will explore in this article. In addition, we will discuss U's latest earnings, business, financials, trading & valuation, and risks so readers can reach their own informed decision on the stock.
\n
(Note: Unless otherwise noted, all forecasted financials refers to consensus estimates and all historical financial data comes from the company.)
\n
Earnings
\n
We will start by quickly going over the company's latest earnings to level-set everyone before moving to the main topic of considering the company's business fundamentals.
\n
U reported FY Q3 earnings (FY ending Dec) on 11/10/2021, resulting in the stock trading up 2.8% the day after earnings. Revenue grew 42.6% y/y to $286 million, beating consensus estimates by 5.7%. Gross margin came in at 80.9%, while operating margin came in at -4.2%, the same as a year ago. EPS for the quarter was -$0.06.
\n
Revenue growth for the quarter was driven by 973 customers who each generated over $100,000 of revenue over the past year, who collectively make up 77% of total sales. Net expansion rate for the quarter was a strong 142%, meaning existing customers drove nearly all of the growth in Q3.
\n
Business
\n
Source: Unity
\n
In the beginning, the company's game engine was focused on creating free-to-play mobile titles monetized via ads. Later, the game engine was enhanced to serve customers interested in building 3D content outside of gaming. Today, Unity is the world's leading platform for creating and operating interactive, real-time 3D content, serving game developers and other creators.
\n
The company operates under two main segments: Create and Operate. Create is the company's game creation engine and contributes to 30% of the company's revenue.Over 50% of mobile games are built on its enterprise SaaS platform, more than five times the market share of the closest competitor. Operate is the company's ad and monetization business, which contributes to 60% of total revenue. With 3.4 billion monthly active users, the company has one of the world's largest ad networks.
\n
Weta Digital
\n
Source: Weta Digital
\n
In Q3 2021, the company surprised investors with the acquisition of Weta Digital, a visual effects technology company, for $1.6B. Weta is expected to add $70M of revenue in 2022, implying a sales multiple of 23x -- this is a rich multiple but well below Unity's own 36x forward sales multiple.
\n
The idea behind the acquisition is to expand U's addressable market into the film industry and beyond and close a technology gap with Epic's Unreal Engine. Weta's core business is creating VFX in film, or digital images on screen, including theLord of the Ringsfranchise. The estimated incremental TAM of this acquisition is around $10 billion.
\n
Weta's tools could help U expand beyond its dominant position in gaming, targeting new verticals such as NFTs, film production, CAD, and e-commerce. In addition, integration of Weta into U's platform should give game developers access to Weta's art assets, creating a new stream of revenue for the company.
\n
After the acquisition of Weta, U seems to be well-positioned to capture new revenue streams in the metaverse: digital infrastructure and NFTs. Before we get into U's competitive position, let's go over the rise of the metaverse and NFTs.
\n
The Age of The Metaverse
\n
Source: Unity
\n
When Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook (FB) would become a metaverse company, it shook the tech industry. Facebook, renamed Meta, has staked its reputation and billions of dollars to help transition the world from mobile-first to metaverse-first. An old concept with origins in science fiction, the metaverse is now fully embraced by the mainstream.
\n
While there are many complex definitions of the metaverse, one simple but still accurate way to think about the metaverse is that it is a more immersive and interoperable internet. The metaverse should be a seamless connection of multiple \"digital universes,\" for example, \"walking\" out of a Facebook hangout room and right into a Fortnite battle while wearing the same digital shoes, which you own as an NFT.
\n
A more immersive and seamless internet should lead to more time spent on the internet, and with more time spent comes more economic activities conducted on the internet. While most of us are accustomed to shopping and banking online, few of us have the same sense of ownership of our digital assets as our physical assets. Without a sense of ownership, the vision of a truly immersive internet -- or the metaverse -- cannot come true. This is because people will likely reject the idea of having no ownership of a metaverse in which they spend so much of their waking hours.
\n
I believe blockchain technology is catalyzing the transformation of the internet from web 2.0 to web 3.0 (or \"web3\"). What makes web3 different is that it introduces digital property rights that depend on code rather than on the arbitrary decisions of governments across the globe. Both fungible and non-fungible tokens will be important building blocks of web3.
\n
An NFT is a unique and non-interchangeable unit of data stored on a blockchain. This data unit could represent anything: a digital gaming item such as a sword, a picture, a video, birth certificate, or title to your home. The NFT as we know it today is a bearer instrument, which means whoever holds the private keys owns the data.
\n
In my view, NFTs will rise concurrently with the metaverse because they are codependent. NFTs need the metaverse's digital infrastructure for distribution, and the digital infrastructure needs NFTs to imbue the metaverse with a sense of ownership for users.
\n
Unity's Metaverse Opportunities
\n
Unity seems well-positioned to capture revenue streams from both buildings, the digital infrastructure of the metaverse, and participating in the NFT economy.
\n
U's core offering is its game engine, which offers digital infrastructures which developers can assemble and build on top of to create the digital worlds of their imagination. This is difficult to describe in writing, so I recommend that readers who are confused about this point watch how developers use Unity to develop games. For example, this short YouTube tutorial clearly illustrates how developers utilize Unity to create video games.
\n
Source: Weta Digital
\n
Similarly, Weta Digital offers tools to build digital infrastructure for films using VFX technology. Films are different from games in that films offer a much more realistic visual experience than games -- think Lord of the Rings (a film) compared to the typical gaming environment such as Fortnite. Combining Unity's game engine and Weta's VFX technology, the company now has the technology stack to create hyper-realistic digital environments for the metaverse. Again, this concept may be easier to grasp with a video.
\n
After U integrates Weta, we expect Weta's VFX tools and art library to be available to U content creators, who could leverage these combined capabilities to craft digital assets that could be tokenized and sold as NFTs. While this is speculative, both the technology and market already exist for U to tap into the rapidly growing NFT economy.
\n
Today, the total value of NFTs issued on the Ethereum (ETH-USD) blockchain alone has already exceeded $14 billion. In 3Q21, NFT trading volume hit $10.7 billion, up 704% from the previous quarter. Needless to say, the NFT market is already big and in hypergrowth mode.
\n
60% of U's revenue comes from its Operate segment, primarily through revenue-share and usage-based models. This segment offers two monetization products: Unity Ads and Unity IAP (in-app purchases). We can easily envision NFTs turbocharging the Unity IAP business by enabling ownership of digital assets which could live in gaming and other digital universes.
\n
Financial
\n
Sell-side consensus is forecasting revenues to grow by 41.1% this fiscal year, reaching $1.1 billion, and by 28.4% the following fiscal year, reaching $1.4 billion. The 28% growth in FY22 seems conservative, so if U doesn't beat this number significantly, I have a hard time seeing the stock justifying its rich multiple (see Trading & Valuation section).
\n
Consensus is forecasting EBIT margin to expand by 52 basis points this fiscal year to -6.0% and expand by 358 basis points the following fiscal year to -2.5%. Going forward, consensus is forecasting EPS to improve to -$0.26 this fiscal year and to improve to -$0.15 the following fiscal year. Note that this is a non-GAAP EPS number, which excludes large amounts of stock-based compensation (standard practice for fast-growing software businesses). The consensus GAAP EPS number is -$1.56 for 2022 vs. -$0.15 non-GAAP.
\n
While it does not appear there is any hope for the company to turn profitable in the next few years. However, free cash flow is expected to turn positive in 2023 with a nearly immaterial $0.7M. If this occurs, the business will likely be viewed as \"self-funding,\" which should help sentiment. However, FCF does not take into account shareholder dilution and repurchase expenses related to stock-based compensation.
\n
With net cash of $626 million, U has a great balance sheet. The company is expected to burn around $180M in cash in 2021 and 2022 before turning FCF positive, leaving plenty of cash for the company to work with.
\n
Trading & Valuation
\n
U currently trades at around $177 per share, a market value of $51 billion, and an enterprise value of $50 billion. The stock does not pay a dividend compared to a dividend yield of 1.2% for the S&P 500.
\n
The sentiment is bullish on the stock, though it seems to be a target for short-sellers. U performed very well over the past year, returning 30% points more than the S&P 500, or 63.1% in absolute return. The stock is trading 52% above its 200-day moving average, 16% below its 52-week high of $210.00, and 133% above its 52-week low of $76.00 per share. However, short interest is high at 6.8%, reflecting some skepticism from professional investors.
\n
Using consensus estimates for next fiscal year's results (FY2), U is currently trading at an EV/Sales multiple of 36.3, a 1,240% premium to the S&P 500. Since EBIT and EPS are expected to be negative, we will only use the EV/Sales metric.
\n
36x forward sales is very rich and bakes in a tremendous amount of optimism. Consensus sales growth for FY23 through FY24 only ranges from 27-28%, which I believe is well below buy-side expectations. In other words, if U doesn't beat consensus significantly, the stock will likely underperform. However, judging from strong growth from previous quarters, including the 43% y/y revenue growth in Q3, and the increasing demand for Unity's platform, the company looks poised to beat forward growth estimates.
\n
Unity's EV/Sales metric has ranged from a low of 20x to a high of 45x, with a large amount of volatility. In my view, this is a sign that the market is still trying to reach a consensus on how to appropriately value the stock. Given the stock's recent run-up, I believe it will be prudent to wait for a better entry point, such as when the market's enthusiasm for the metaverse gets supplanted by the next \"hot thing\". I will revisit when the stock trades around a 25x EV/Sales multiple.
\n
Risks
\n
While the vision for the metaverse is exciting, we are very early days in its evolution. The addressable market for the metaverse is still being defined, and business models are being tested. This leads to little visibility for individual companies trying to establish a position in this emerging industry.
\n
While Unity looks like it is well-positioned for the rise of the metaverse, the stock trades at a nose bleed valuation. In addition, the company isn't expected to be profitable in the near to medium term. Given the lack of support from free cash flow, Unity's EV/Sales multiple is at risk of being re-rated significantly lower when the company hits a speed bump. Thus, the stock may only be appropriate for investors with a high-risk tolerance.
\n
Unity's game engine faces competition from Epic's Unreal engine at the high-end, Roblox (RBLX) at the low end, and proprietary in-house platforms. Each of the three major competitors has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, Unity seems to have the upper hand in ease-of-use, mobile games, and AR/VR capabilities, while Unreal has the upper hand in complex gameplay, console games, and HD graphics. However, it is more difficult to predict the relative competitive advantages each company will enjoy in the rapidly emerging metaverse.
\n
The majority of Unity's revenues comes from game developers who develop mobile games distributed on Alphabet's (GOOG) (GOOGL) and Apple's (AAPL) app stores. While this isn't an immediate concern, investors should know Unity's dependence on these two tech giants.
\n
Takeaway
\n
After the acquisition of Weta, Unity seems to be well-positioned to capture new revenue streams in the metaverse. The company is poised to play a role in building the digital infrastructure of the metaverse and play a meaningful in the emerging NFT economy. However, the stock's very high valuation and current hype around the metaverse are cause for concern. Given the lack of profitability, high valuation, and lack of near-term visibility, I will continue to watch this very compelling company on the sidelines.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Unity Software's Metaverse Opportunity
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nUnity Software's Metaverse Opportunity\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-11-23 14:20 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nUnity, after the acquisition of Weta, seems to be well-positioned to capture new revenue streams in the metaverse.\nUnity seems well-positioned to capture revenue streams from both building ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"U":"Unity Software Inc."},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4471322-unity-softwares-metaverse-opportunity","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1147489710","content_text":"Summary\n\nUnity, after the acquisition of Weta, seems to be well-positioned to capture new revenue streams in the metaverse.\nUnity seems well-positioned to capture revenue streams from both building the digital infrastructure of the metaverse and participating in the NFT economy.\nHowever, at over 38 times forward sales and a frenzy of optimism, the stock might be ahead of the near-term fundamentals.\n\nBlackSalmon/iStock via Getty Images\nUnity Software Inc. Although the stock's high valuation may keep some investors on the sideline, investors should keep a close eye on this highly differentiated company.\nOpportunity in the metaverse is the main topic we will explore in this article. In addition, we will discuss U's latest earnings, business, financials, trading & valuation, and risks so readers can reach their own informed decision on the stock.\n(Note: Unless otherwise noted, all forecasted financials refers to consensus estimates and all historical financial data comes from the company.)\nEarnings\nWe will start by quickly going over the company's latest earnings to level-set everyone before moving to the main topic of considering the company's business fundamentals.\nU reported FY Q3 earnings (FY ending Dec) on 11/10/2021, resulting in the stock trading up 2.8% the day after earnings. Revenue grew 42.6% y/y to $286 million, beating consensus estimates by 5.7%. Gross margin came in at 80.9%, while operating margin came in at -4.2%, the same as a year ago. EPS for the quarter was -$0.06.\nRevenue growth for the quarter was driven by 973 customers who each generated over $100,000 of revenue over the past year, who collectively make up 77% of total sales. Net expansion rate for the quarter was a strong 142%, meaning existing customers drove nearly all of the growth in Q3.\nBusiness\nSource: Unity\nIn the beginning, the company's game engine was focused on creating free-to-play mobile titles monetized via ads. Later, the game engine was enhanced to serve customers interested in building 3D content outside of gaming. Today, Unity is the world's leading platform for creating and operating interactive, real-time 3D content, serving game developers and other creators.\nThe company operates under two main segments: Create and Operate. Create is the company's game creation engine and contributes to 30% of the company's revenue.Over 50% of mobile games are built on its enterprise SaaS platform, more than five times the market share of the closest competitor. Operate is the company's ad and monetization business, which contributes to 60% of total revenue. With 3.4 billion monthly active users, the company has one of the world's largest ad networks.\nWeta Digital\nSource: Weta Digital\nIn Q3 2021, the company surprised investors with the acquisition of Weta Digital, a visual effects technology company, for $1.6B. Weta is expected to add $70M of revenue in 2022, implying a sales multiple of 23x -- this is a rich multiple but well below Unity's own 36x forward sales multiple.\nThe idea behind the acquisition is to expand U's addressable market into the film industry and beyond and close a technology gap with Epic's Unreal Engine. Weta's core business is creating VFX in film, or digital images on screen, including theLord of the Ringsfranchise. The estimated incremental TAM of this acquisition is around $10 billion.\nWeta's tools could help U expand beyond its dominant position in gaming, targeting new verticals such as NFTs, film production, CAD, and e-commerce. In addition, integration of Weta into U's platform should give game developers access to Weta's art assets, creating a new stream of revenue for the company.\nAfter the acquisition of Weta, U seems to be well-positioned to capture new revenue streams in the metaverse: digital infrastructure and NFTs. Before we get into U's competitive position, let's go over the rise of the metaverse and NFTs.\nThe Age of The Metaverse\nSource: Unity\nWhen Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook (FB) would become a metaverse company, it shook the tech industry. Facebook, renamed Meta, has staked its reputation and billions of dollars to help transition the world from mobile-first to metaverse-first. An old concept with origins in science fiction, the metaverse is now fully embraced by the mainstream.\nWhile there are many complex definitions of the metaverse, one simple but still accurate way to think about the metaverse is that it is a more immersive and interoperable internet. The metaverse should be a seamless connection of multiple \"digital universes,\" for example, \"walking\" out of a Facebook hangout room and right into a Fortnite battle while wearing the same digital shoes, which you own as an NFT.\nA more immersive and seamless internet should lead to more time spent on the internet, and with more time spent comes more economic activities conducted on the internet. While most of us are accustomed to shopping and banking online, few of us have the same sense of ownership of our digital assets as our physical assets. Without a sense of ownership, the vision of a truly immersive internet -- or the metaverse -- cannot come true. This is because people will likely reject the idea of having no ownership of a metaverse in which they spend so much of their waking hours.\nI believe blockchain technology is catalyzing the transformation of the internet from web 2.0 to web 3.0 (or \"web3\"). What makes web3 different is that it introduces digital property rights that depend on code rather than on the arbitrary decisions of governments across the globe. Both fungible and non-fungible tokens will be important building blocks of web3.\nAn NFT is a unique and non-interchangeable unit of data stored on a blockchain. This data unit could represent anything: a digital gaming item such as a sword, a picture, a video, birth certificate, or title to your home. The NFT as we know it today is a bearer instrument, which means whoever holds the private keys owns the data.\nIn my view, NFTs will rise concurrently with the metaverse because they are codependent. NFTs need the metaverse's digital infrastructure for distribution, and the digital infrastructure needs NFTs to imbue the metaverse with a sense of ownership for users.\nUnity's Metaverse Opportunities\nUnity seems well-positioned to capture revenue streams from both buildings, the digital infrastructure of the metaverse, and participating in the NFT economy.\nU's core offering is its game engine, which offers digital infrastructures which developers can assemble and build on top of to create the digital worlds of their imagination. This is difficult to describe in writing, so I recommend that readers who are confused about this point watch how developers use Unity to develop games. For example, this short YouTube tutorial clearly illustrates how developers utilize Unity to create video games.\nSource: Weta Digital\nSimilarly, Weta Digital offers tools to build digital infrastructure for films using VFX technology. Again, this concept may be easier to grasp with a video.\nAfter U integrates Weta, we expect Weta's VFX tools and art library to be available to U content creators, who could leverage these combined capabilities to craft digital assets that could be tokenized and sold as NFTs. While this is speculative, both the technology and market already exist for U to tap into the rapidly growing NFT economy.\nToday, the total value of NFTs issued on the Ethereum (ETH-USD) blockchain alone has already exceeded $14 billion. In 3Q21, NFT trading volume hit $10.7 billion, up 704% from the previous quarter. Needless to say, the NFT market is already big and in hypergrowth mode.\n60% of U's revenue comes from its Operate segment, primarily through revenue-share and usage-based models. This segment offers two monetization products: Unity Ads and Unity IAP (in-app purchases). We can easily envision NFTs turbocharging the Unity IAP business by enabling ownership of digital assets which could live in gaming and other digital universes.\nFinancial\nSell-side consensus is forecasting revenues to grow by 41.1% this fiscal year, reaching $1.1 billion, and by 28.4% the following fiscal year, reaching $1.4 billion. The 28% growth in FY22 seems conservative, so if U doesn't beat this number significantly, I have a hard time seeing the stock justifying its rich multiple (see Trading & Valuation section).\nConsensus is forecasting EBIT margin to expand by 52 basis points this fiscal year to -6.0% and expand by 358 basis points the following fiscal year to -2.5%. -$0.15 non-GAAP.\nWhile it does not appear there is any hope for the company to turn profitable in the next few years. However, free cash flow is expected to turn positive in 2023 with a nearly immaterial $0.7M. If this occurs, the business will likely be viewed as \"self-funding,\" which should help sentiment. However, FCF does not take into account shareholder dilution and repurchase expenses related to stock-based compensation.\nWith net cash of $626 million, U has a great balance sheet. The company is expected to burn around $180M in cash in 2021 and 2022 before turning FCF positive, leaving plenty of cash for the company to work with.\nTrading & Valuation\nU currently trades at around $177 per share, a market value of $51 billion, and an enterprise value of $50 billion. The stock does not pay a dividend compared to a dividend yield of 1.2% for the S&P 500.\nThe sentiment is bullish on the stock, though it seems to be a target for short-sellers. U performed very well over the past year, returning 30% points more than the S&P 500, or 63.1% in absolute return. The stock is trading 52% above its 200-day moving average, 16% below its 52-week high of $210.00, and 133% above its 52-week low of $76.00 per share. However, short interest is high at 6.8%, reflecting some skepticism from professional investors.\nUsing consensus estimates for next fiscal year's results (FY2), U is currently trading at an EV/Sales multiple of 36.3, a 1,240% premium to the S&P 500. Since EBIT and EPS are expected to be negative, we will only use the EV/Sales metric.\n36x forward sales is very rich and bakes in a tremendous amount of optimism. Consensus sales growth for FY23 through FY24 only ranges from 27-28%, which I believe is well below buy-side expectations. In other words, if U doesn't beat consensus significantly, the stock will likely underperform. However, judging from strong growth from previous quarters, including the 43% y/y revenue growth in Q3, and the increasing demand for Unity's platform, the company looks poised to beat forward growth estimates.\nUnity's EV/Sales metric has ranged from a low of 20x to a high of 45x, with a large amount of volatility. I will revisit when the stock trades around a 25x EV/Sales multiple.\nRisks\nWhile the vision for the metaverse is exciting, we are very early days in its evolution. The addressable market for the metaverse is still being defined, and business models are being tested. This leads to little visibility for individual companies trying to establish a position in this emerging industry.\nWhile Unity looks like it is well-positioned for the rise of the metaverse, the stock trades at a nose bleed valuation. Given the lack of support from free cash flow, Unity's EV/Sales multiple is at risk of being re-rated significantly lower when the company hits a speed bump. Thus, the stock may only be appropriate for investors with a high-risk tolerance.\nUnity's game engine faces competition from Epic's Unreal engine at the high-end, Roblox (RBLX) at the low end, and proprietary in-house platforms. For example, investing $300 a month could grow into more than $1 million in 30 years if it can generate a 12% annual return. That's slightly better than the average stock market return over the last 50 years of nearly 11%.
\n
Many companies have a long history of beating the market. Three companies that appear likely to continue doing so in the decades ahead are Brookfield Renewable , Crown Castle International , and NextEra Energy . Because of that, $100 invested in each one every month could grow into a $1 million nest egg by retirement.
\n
Benefiting from a powerful megatrend
\n
Brookfield Renewable has enriched its investors over the years.
That's bigger than the company's current operating portfolio of about 21 GW. Combined with rising power rates, and its growing scale, these projects should support up to 11% annual cash flow per share growth through at least 2026.
\n
Meanwhile, Brookfield sees up to another 9% yearly boost from future acquisitions. Add that growing renewable-powered cash flow stream to the company's 3%-yielding dividend, and Brookfield appears to have the power to produce double-digit annual returns for decades to come.
\n
Connected to the data supercycle
\n
Crown Castle has been an exceptional value creator over the years. The infrastructure-focused real estate investment trust (REIT) has delivered a more than 13% annual total return over the two-plus decades since its initial public offering.
\n
A major driver of those returns has been the billions of dollars the company has poured into expanding its communications infrastructure portfolio.
That suggests the company could deliver double-digit total returns in the coming years.
\n
Plugged into several growth catalysts
\n
NextEra Energy has also created an enormous amount of wealth for its investors over the years. The utility has generated a roughly 700% total return over the last decade alone, crushing the 276% total return produced by the S&P 500. Powering the company's robust results has been its ability to deliver above-average earnings and dividend growth. It has increased its earnings per share at an 8.7% compound annual rate since 2005, supporting 9.6% compound annual dividend growth.
\n
A major catalyst has been the company's leadership in renewable energy. It has grown into one of the world's largest wind and solar energy producers.
\n
That leadership should continue since it has one of the world's biggest backlogs of wind and solar energy development projects. In addition to tried-and-true technologies like wind and solar, NextEra is a leader in emerging technologies, including battery storage and green hydrogen. Meanwhile, it's tapping into other sources of growth like water infrastructure. Because of that, NextEra should have plenty of power to continue growing its earnings and dividend in the decades ahead.
\n
Grow rich slowly
\n
Compound interest can do wonders for your retirement. For example, investing $300 a month could grow into more than $1 million in 30 years if it can generate a 12% annual return. That's slightly better than the average stock market return over the last 50 years of nearly 11%. \nMany companies have a long history of beating the market. Three companies that appear likely to continue doing so in the decades ahead are Brookfield Renewable , Crown Castle International , and NextEra Energy . Because of that, $100 invested in each one every month could grow into a $1 million nest egg by retirement.\nBenefiting from a powerful megatrend\nBrookfield Renewable has enriched its investors over the years. Since its inception, the renewable energy producer has generated an annualized total return of 19%. The company had done that by investing billions of dollars into expanding its renewable energy portfolio. That has powered more than 10% annual growth in its cash flow per share, supporting 6% annual dividend increases over the last decade. \nHowever, Brookfield's best days appear to lie ahead. The global economy needs to invest trillions of dollars to decarbonize the energy sector over the next 30 years. That should enable Brookfield to continue to invest in expanding its renewable energy portfolio.\nThe company currently has 36 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy projects in development. That's bigger than the company's current operating portfolio of about 21 GW. Combined with rising power rates, and its growing scale, these projects should support up to 11% annual cash flow per share growth through at least 2026. \nMeanwhile, Brookfield sees up to another 9% yearly boost from future acquisitions. Add that growing renewable-powered cash flow stream to the company's 3%-yielding dividend, and Brookfield appears to have the power to produce double-digit annual returns for decades to come. \nConnected to the data supercycle\nCrown Castle has been an exceptional value creator over the years. The infrastructure-focused real estate investment trust (REIT) has delivered a more than 13% annual total return over the two-plus decades since its initial public offering. \nA major driver of those returns has been the billions of dollars the company has poured into expanding its communications infrastructure portfolio. Over the last decade alone, the REIT spent $31 billion on acquisitions and capital expenditures (capex), powering 9% annual dividend growth since 2014. \nThe company still sees significant investment opportunities ahead. \nCrown Castle expects to grow its 3.2%-yielding dividend at a 7% to 8% annual rate in the near term. That suggests the company could deliver double-digit total returns in the coming years. \nPlugged into several growth catalysts\nNextEra Energy has also created an enormous amount of wealth for its investors over the years. \nA major catalyst has been the company's leadership in renewable energy. It has grown into one of the world's largest wind and solar energy producers. \nThat leadership should continue since it has one of the world's biggest backlogs of wind and solar energy development projects. In addition to tried-and-true technologies like wind and solar, NextEra is a leader in emerging technologies, including battery storage and green hydrogen. Meanwhile, it's tapping into other sources of growth like water infrastructure. Because of that, NextEra should have plenty of power to continue growing its earnings and dividend in the decades ahead.\nGrow rich slowly\nCompound interest can do wonders for your retirement. Steadily investing a few hundred dollars each month into high-performing stocks can create an enormous amount of wealth. One of the keys to finding stocks that can deliver decades of strong returns is focusing on those benefiting from megatrends.
Invest $100,000 in These 2 Stocks and Hold Until 2035","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2190679207","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"These two stocks could change your retirement.","content":"
Over the past 15 years, the S&P 500 has risen in price 232%, which results in a 9.8% compound annual growth rate without inflation. If this continued for the next 15 years, you would have over $300,000 in savings to retire on if you invested $100,000, which is bigger than the average 60-year-old American's 401(k) balance.
\n
While this strategy could produce solid returns, there are two stocks that could crush that average by 2035. Here's why I think Latch (NASDAQ:LTCH) and Lemonade (NYSE:LMND) have the potential to provide high-quality returns so that you can retire right.
\n
1. Latch: Smart security
\n
This smart lock manufacturer is taking the industry by storm with its software. With LatchOS, apartment managers can get a birds-eye view of all their apartments on one platform, making sure all of their tenants are safe and secure. Moreover, managers can let in workers or delivery people from that platform. Latch is the only company that can offer a combination of smart, keyless locks and innovative software, so it's no wonder it is rapidly being adopted by apartment buildings across America.
\n
Nearly a third of new apartment buildings are being built today with Latch installed in them, and once Latch's locks are in, it can be incredibly hard to replace them with a competitor. Additionally, when customers agree to use Latch, they sign six- to 10-year contracts to use LatchOS. These two factors provide amazingly high switching costs, so once Latch is installed, it's likely that its users will stay Latch users for a long time. Latch has experienced zero turnovers since it started operations in 2017, and that will probably continue to be the case.
\n
Latch's market is massive, and the high switching costs and first-mover advantage will likely allow the company to capitalize on it. Latch sees a market opportunity of $54 billion in the U.S. alone, and if the company is able to expand internationally in a few years, that adds another $90 billion.
\n
Latch's partnerships will be another integral part of the company's success. Since Latch customers sign agreements with Latch to use its products before the apartments are even built, it is crucial that Latch is in talks with apartment managers before the construction team breaks ground. That is why Latch has partnered with some of the largest apartment builders in the U.S., like Brookfield (NYSE:BAM) and Avalon Bay (NYSE:AVB).
\n
This company has only been operational since 2017, so there are plenty of risks with this business. The primary risk is that it is losing lots of cash.
\n
\n
\n
\n
Metric
\n
Q3 2020
\n
Q3 2021
\n
Change
\n
\n
\n
Net loss
\n
$15.9 million
\n
$34.2 million
\n
115%
\n
\n
\n
Net loss as a percentage of revenue
\n
311.5%
\n
305.7%
\n
N/A
\n
\n
\n
\n
The company is making most of its money today on its locks, which it sells at a loss. These losses are bad today, but Latch's profitability can improve. Latch has noted that the timeframe it takes from construction to a builder beginning their subscription services is 24 months. The contracts the company has seen could finally turn into reportable revenue within the next couple of years. Analysts see the potential as well with growth forecasts of nearly 50% for the next five years.
\n
Also, as its customers stay with the company longer and pay more in its subscription fees for the software -- which has gross margins of 90% -- the company's losses will likely improve to provide a pathway to profitability. This could be a multi-year effort, but if it can use its differentiated product and strong partnerships to attract customers and its high switching costs to retain them, Latch could give investors immense returns by 2035.
\n
2. Lemonade: An insurance provider anyone can love
\n
Lemonade is making insurance enjoyable. Whether applying for insurance or getting a claim, Lemonade's process is easy and hassle-free with its artificial intelligence (AI)-based bots that can approve applicants and claims in seconds. The company is also aligning its interest with its consumers: Lemonade charges a flat fee, and any money from leftover claims that went unpaid goes to charities that Lemonade customers choose. So far in 2021, Lemonade has donated over $2.2 million in unpaid claims on behalf of its customers.
\n
Lemonade's incentive alignment structure can hurt its bottom line, but it has resulted in amazing customer attraction. Lemonade has over 1.3 million customers, and it has been one of the fastest-growing insurance stocks ever.
\n
The company started in renters insurance, targeting young renters. However, just as its customers have moved on in life, Lemonade has expanded. Now it offers homeowners, pet, life, and even car insurance. Lemonade hopes to attract young customers with small offerings like renters and car insurance, then integrate them deeper into the ecosystem with its fast and delightful service.
\n
\n
\n
\n
Metric
\n
First Nine Months of 2020
\n
First Nine Months of 2021
\n
Change
\n
\n
\n
Net loss
\n
$88.4 million
\n
$171.0 million
\n
93.4%
\n
\n
\n
Net loss as a percentage of revenue
\n
119.6%
\n
195.6%
\n

N/A

\n
\n
\n
\n
This major uptick in net losses has primarily been because of the company's loss ratio. Lemonade's net loss ratio -- which represents the amount of premium paid out on claims -- was 77% in the third quarter. A ratio of 75% or below is the long-term goal that management is targeting, but it has been consistently higher in 2021 because of the new products that Lemonade has launched this year and in 2020.
\n
Lemonade's AI can often take time to learn and collect data about its new markets, resulting in poor short-term performance but long-term opportunities. As its AI obtains more data, it should become more accurate, lowering its loss ratio and its net loss. With the lowered loss ratio, investors could expect the company to generate a profit, which would provide optimism beyond its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts.
\n
Both of these companies are incredibly young and are quite risky today, which is clearly noted in the stock decreases of more than 25% for each year-to-date. But in a balanced portfolio, these stocks could define someone's future investing success. If both companies can use their competitive edges to rapidly grow their business over the next 15 years and become profitable, they could reward investors by 2035.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Want $1 Million in Retirement? If this continued for the next 15 years, you would have over $300,000 in savings to retire on if you invested $100,000, which is bigger than the average 60-year-old American's 401(k) balance.\nWhile this strategy could produce solid returns, there are two stocks that could crush that average by 2035. Here's why I think Latch (NASDAQ:LTCH) and Lemonade (NYSE:LMND) have the potential to provide high-quality returns so that you can retire right.\n1. Latch: Smart security\nThis smart lock manufacturer is taking the industry by storm with its software. With LatchOS, apartment managers can get a birds-eye view of all their apartments on one platform, making sure all of their tenants are safe and secure. Moreover, managers can let in workers or delivery people from that platform. Latch is the only company that can offer a combination of smart, keyless locks and innovative software, so it's no wonder it is rapidly being adopted by apartment buildings across America.\nNearly a third of new apartment buildings are being built today with Latch installed in them, and once Latch's locks are in, it can be incredibly hard to replace them with a competitor. Additionally, when customers agree to use Latch, they sign six- to 10-year contracts to use LatchOS. These two factors provide amazingly high switching costs, so once Latch is installed, it's likely that its users will stay Latch users for a long time. Latch has experienced zero turnovers since it started operations in 2017, and that will probably continue to be the case.\nLatch's market is massive, and the high switching costs and first-mover advantage will likely allow the company to capitalize on it. Latch sees a market opportunity of $54 billion in the U.S. alone, and if the company is able to expand internationally in a few years, that adds another $90 billion.\nLatch's partnerships will be another integral part of the company's success. Since Latch customers sign agreements with Latch to use its products before the apartments are even built, it is crucial that Latch is in talks with apartment managers before the construction team breaks ground. That is why Latch has partnered with some of the largest apartment builders in the U.S., like Brookfield (NYSE:BAM) and Avalon Bay (NYSE:AVB).\nThis company has only been operational since 2017, so there are plenty of risks with this business. The primary risk is that it is losing lots of cash.\n\n\n\nMetric\nQ3 2020\nQ3 2021\nChange\n\n\nNet loss\n$15.9 million\n$34.2 million\n115%\n\n\nNet loss as a percentage of revenue\n311.5%\n305.7%\nN/A\n\n\n\nThe company is making most of its money today on its locks, which it sells at a loss. These losses are bad today, but Latch's profitability can improve. Latch has noted that the timeframe it takes from construction to a builder beginning their subscription services is 24 months. The contracts the company has seen could finally turn into reportable revenue within the next couple of years. Analysts see the potential as well with growth forecasts of nearly 50% for the next five years.\nAlso, as its customers stay with the company longer and pay more in its subscription fees for the software -- which has gross margins of 90% -- the company's losses will likely improve to provide a pathway to profitability. This could be a multi-year effort, but if it can use its differentiated product and strong partnerships to attract customers and its high switching costs to retain them, Latch could give investors immense returns by 2035.\n2. Lemonade: An insurance provider anyone can love\nLemonade is making insurance enjoyable. So far in 2021, Lemonade has donated over $2.2 million in unpaid claims on behalf of its customers.\nLemonade's incentive alignment structure can hurt its bottom line, but it has resulted in amazing customer attraction. Lemonade has over 1.3 million customers, and it has been one of the fastest-growing insurance stocks ever.\nThe company started in renters insurance, targeting young renters. However, just as its customers have moved on in life, Lemonade has expanded. Now it offers homeowners, pet, life, and even car insurance. Lemonade hopes to attract young customers with small offerings like renters and car insurance, then integrate them deeper into the ecosystem with its fast and delightful service.\n\n\n\nMetric\nFirst Nine Months of 2020\nFirst Nine Months of 2021\nChange\n\n\nNet loss\n$88.4 million\n$171.0 million\n93.4%\n\n\nNet loss as a percentage of revenue\n119.6%\n195.6%\nN/A\n\n\n\nThis major uptick in net losses has primarily been because of the company's loss ratio. Lemonade's net loss ratio -- which represents the amount of premium paid out on claims -- was 77% in the third quarter. A ratio of 75% or below is the long-term goal that management is targeting, but it has been consistently higher in 2021 because of the new products that Lemonade has launched this year and in 2020.\nLemonade's AI can often take time to learn and collect data about its new markets, resulting in poor short-term performance but long-term opportunities. As its AI obtains more data, it should become more accurate, lowering its loss ratio and its net loss. With the lowered loss ratio, investors could expect the company to generate a profit, which would provide optimism beyond its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts.\nBoth of these companies are incredibly young and are quite risky today, which is clearly noted in the stock decreases of more than 25% for each year-to-date. But in a balanced portfolio, these stocks could define someone's future investing success. If both companies can use their competitive edges to rapidly grow their business over the next 15 years and become profitable, they could reward investors by 2035.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":666,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":875976880,"gmtCreate":1637597551994,"gmtModify":1637597551994,"author":{"id":"3561201203930690","authorId":"3561201203930690","name":"Lion91","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7ea44be8fbae5e18211977f4b4c51d1e","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$iSpecimen Inc.(ISPC)$pump and dump guys.
