tg-width=\"1536\" tg-height=\"1024\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>kokkai/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images</span></p>\n<p><b>Thesis</b></p>\n<p>A by-parts analysis of Sea Limited's (NYSE:SE) segments shows that its current valuation is roughly fair, but there are many long-term growth drivers that could surprise to the upside and drive very strong returns for years to come.</p>\n<p><b>Introduction</b></p>\n<p>I recently wrote an&nbsp;article&nbsp;highlighting my top 10 stock picks for 2022. I'd already done an in-depth analysis of my other nine picks in other Seeking Alpha articles, so I thought it would be good to close out the year with an article about Sea.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, with shares down significantly over the past couple of months (but still slightly up for the year), I believe this article may prove timely. I don't speculate on short-term market movements, but I personally added to my Sea shares recently. It's one of my only losing positions that I didn't sell out of temporarily for tax-loss harvesting, and in this article, I will explain why Sea is such a high conviction holding for me.</p>\n<p>It's also worth noting that many professional investors seem to share this opinion. Sea is the 121st largest company in the world, but it's the16thmost popular holding among hedge funds. This implies that big money is overweight Sea, with 71% of shares held by institutions.</p>\n<p>Because Sea operates in many different areas, I will do a separate analysis of each of its operating segments to justify its current valuation and explain how that valuation could drive unexpectedly strong returns for years.</p>\n<p><b>Gaming</b></p>\n<p>Sea Limited's gaming segment Garena is best known for Free Fire, a mobile battle royale game that was developed in-house.</p>\n<p>The game was released in 2017 and has been very popular ever since. It currently has the second most monthly active users among all Android games globally. The game is available worldwide, but it's particularly popular in emerging markets like SEA, LATAM, and India, where it's been the highest-grossing mobile game for over two years.</p>\n<p>With the game having been popular for a long time already, there's some concern that gamers will move on to the next big thing. Although there are some mobile games that are older than Free Fire and still very popular - like Roblox, Clash of Clans, and Pokemon Go - there are many more that have been forgotten. Until Garena releases more games and proves that it can be successful with them too, there will always be questions about whether its studio is a one-hit wonder.</p>\n<p>Regardless, Garena is a critical part of Sea because it's the only profitable segment and it doubles a social platform that provides free advertising for Sea's non-gaming products. Cross-promotion is a huge competitive advantage for Sea.</p>\n<p>Thus, one reason for Sea's recent selloff could be the Q4 guidance implied for Garena.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9e299727cc28a887a36d88831aec8f53\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"334\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Earnings Call Presentation</span></p>\n<p>In Q2 this year, Garena raised its guidance to $4.5B-$4.7B for 2021 bookings (up from $4.3B-$4.5B). With the first three quarters already totaling $3.5B, this implies that Q4 bookings will come in at $1.0B-$1.2B, up between 0% and 20% year over year, and likely down sequentially. This is compared to 29% growth in the most recent quarter and 44% projected growth for the full year.</p>\n<p>While 20% isn't a terrible deceleration, 0% certainly is. Even 20% growth isn't spectacular compared to the historic levels. At the 10% midpoint, Garena's growth looks more similar to that of a mature company like Activision (NASDAQ:ATVI) or Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA) than a fast-growing company like Roblox (NYSE:RBLX).</p>\n<p>Garena's implied valuation should - and did - suffer as a result. While a fast-growing company like Roblox can command a high double-digit P/S multiple, Activision and Zynga trade at an average P/S multiple of just 4. Garena is slightly more profitable than them and probably has more risk to the upside, so I'll use a P/S multiple of 5 for my implied valuation. This implies a P/E of about 10 for a business growing at around 10%, which is very reasonable in today's market.</p>\n<p>This means Garena is worth $23.5B based on the high end of management's guidance.</p>\n<p>I believe this valuation is actually conservative for a few reasons:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Next year has tough comps and growth could re-accelerate in the following years or even next year, especially if Garena releases a new hit game. The growth rate past next quarter is not based on explicit guidance from the company, only industry forecasts.</li>\n <li>The peer valuations I used are from companies also trading at the lower end of their valuation range for the past year.</li>\n <li>Garena has a good track record and is continuing to invest in Free Fire. One example of this is the recently released Free Fire MAX, which improves the experience for users with higher-end phones and even adds a metaverse-like customizable map called Craftland. To me, this implies that Garena believes Free Fire is still in the earlier part of its lifecycle.</li>\n <li>Although I'd obviously prefer that Garena develops more games in house, in the meantime it's still not a one-trick pony. In addition to Free Fire, Garena distributes games from third-party developers like Tencent (OTCMKTS:OTCPK:TCEHY). These are popular titles like League of Legends and Call of Duty, which meaningfully diversify Garena's revenue.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>E-Commerce</b></p>\n<p>Sea's e-commerce platform Shopee is currently its big growth driver. This platform is often considered the Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) of Southeast Asia, and it recently expanded into more markets including Brazil.</p>\n<p>There's always some debate about who is really the Amazon of a region. Shopee certainly has competition, including from Alibaba's (NYSE:BABA) Lazada, Tokopedia in Indonesia, MercadoLibre (MELI) in Brazil, and even Amazon itself. With most of the competition being private or tucked away into a larger company, many of the competitors don't publish exact revenue numbers, which makes it difficult to measure the competition. Even Sea hasn't published explicit revenue numbers for some countries like Brazil.</p>\n<p>One neutral source that can be assessed is the Alexa site rank, which as its name suggests ranks sites by their popularity. Keep in mind that these are ranks, so a lower score is better.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/180367a2b64bccebf243c5b6d8fb776a\" tg-width=\"455\" tg-height=\"353\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: The Author, compiled from Alexa</span></p>\n<p>Shopee is very mobile-focused, but the above table only considers the website. To check App Store app ranks for the shopping category, we can use App Annie.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6544f014a5d70d13ee14dab0ac8b6782\" tg-width=\"422\" tg-height=\"403\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: The Author, compiled from AppAnnie</span></p>\n<p>On the mobile side, there's no need to look at the competition because Shopee is consistently the number one shopping app in every country listed. In a mobile-first world, this bodes very well. Even on the web side, Shopee wins out except in a few specific regions like LATAM and (barely) Indonesia, which have more local competitors.</p>\n<p>Of course, traffic doesn't always translate to GMV. But for a shopping app where most people will use the app to buy something, it's a decent proxy. A third party estimates that Shopee accounts for57%of all e-commerce in Southeast Asia. It's Shopee's dominance in the mobile app ranks and market share that make me consider it the Amazon of Southeast Asia.</p>\n<p>So why would a company with so much potential sell off?</p>\n<p>After the recent earnings report, some analysts expressed concern that Shopee is branching out into other countries like Poland and Mexico before validating its business model in the current markets. In these countries, Shopee has less of a presence; it's bounced between the 3-5 spots on the Mexico App Store for shopping apps, and between spots 1 and 3 in Poland. Although analysts hate uncertainty - and the CEO's comments that they don't have a concrete measure of success in these earlier stage countries won't help with that - Shopee has a history of entering new countries successfully and I am willing to give management some time to try expanding more. After all, if they're successful, then it could drive even more unexpected growth in the future.</p>\n<p>Another complaint from analysts was that the basket size (average purchase size) is trending down. While that could also have contributed to the recent selloff, it's hard to complain when the overall sales increased a lot despite a decrease in basket size.</p>\n<p>The company raised its guidance for e-commerce again in Q3, now guiding for $5.0B-$5.2B in 2021 e-commerce revenue. That's 75%-100% growth in Q4 and about 135% growth for the year. These are much more exciting numbers than the gaming side, although the guidance still implies a slight deceleration in Q4. But compared to Amazon's $340B in 2020 e-commerce sales, Shopee looks like it's just scratched the surface. E-commerce is at only11%penetration in Southeast Asia compared to18.7%in the USA, and Southeast Asia economies are generally growing faster than the USA's.</p>\n<p>Despite being in a blue skies industry, it's more difficult to value the e-commerce segment because it operates at a loss (whereas the gaming segment is highly profitable). Shopee's success is not guaranteed because it's not clear at this point whether the platform can become profitable while retaining its market share. Stocks like this tend to experience more volatility, which could partially explain the recent selloff.</p>\n<p>For unprofitable software companies, I like to use the Rule of 40 to assess the business. But it's difficult to apply this rule to a more cyclical e-commerce company with naturally lower margins. Even so, it's worth noting that despite being unprofitable, Sea's Rule of 40 score of 104 is better than most SaaS companies', and also better than e-commerce peers Amazon (21), MercadoLibre (73), and Alibaba (43).</p>\n<p>To understand Shopee's terminal valuation once it becomes profitable, we can look at industry peers. Amazon is one profitable and slower-growing peer, and it trades at 4x P/S. AWS pushes this number up, but Amazon's high exposure to first-party sales offsets that. Other e-commerce marketplace peers trade at similar valuations: Alibaba at 3x P/S, MercadoLibre at 9x P/S. All of these valuations are basically all-time lows.</p>\n<p>If Shopee keeps doubling revenue over the next couple of years (which it's easily done every year since 2016), becomes profitable (which scaling up tends to help with), and will have Amazon's P/S multiple in two years, then at 16 P/S today it would trade flat for two years. But if it keeps growing much faster than Amazon over a longer period like a decade, and/or if the overall industry multiples expand to more normal historical levels, then even at 16x P/S this segment has potential upside. On the other hand, if it stops growing or never becomes profitable then investors will be very disappointed at any P/S.</p>\n<p>Given this wide range of outcomes, each person is going to have their own way of valuing this segment. For me, when I look at Shopee's mobile dominance, relatively small current size, the funding coming in from Garena, and the precedent set by Amazon, Alibaba, and MercadoLibre for the sustainable long-term success of this business model, I am optimistic about this segment's future. I recognize that it's currently an unprofitable and thus risky segment, but I also see the massive potential.</p>\n<p>So I am happy paying a 16x P/S multiple, which values the e-commerce segment at $83.2B. Some people will call that way too high, and those people will probably never get a chance to invest in this company, for better or for worse.</p>\n<p>Thus, with just Garena and Shopee, I have Sea being worth $106.7B. Its current market cap is $123.1B. To account for the difference, let's look at the other parts of Sea.</p>\n<p><b>FinTech &amp; Investments</b></p>\n<p>The easiest addition to my computed valuation is Sea's $12B cash pile, partially offset by $4B in debt. This adds some nice optionality to the company and ensures that it won't be bankrupt any time soon despite losing money with Shopee. Adding in the $8B cash difference puts my computed valuation at $114.7B, just $8.4B short of the actual valuation.</p>\n<p>Then there is Sea's FinTech arm, SeaMoney. The main product here is a mobile wallet, which was responsible for $4.6B in payment volume in the last quarter (~$20B over a year). This segment accounted for $132 million in Q3 revenue, up a whopping 818% year over year. This implies a \"take rate\" of 2.9%, which is even better than established FinTech companies like Visa (V). Because of this high take rate, I'm not worried about SeaMoney losing money while it scales.</p>\n<p>Despite SeaMoney being a small segment, it's now reaching a point where it can be factored into the valuation. Maybe it's only worth a couple of billion, but this is just the start. Five years ago, nobody would have expected that an e-commerce platform accounting for 5% of Sea's sales would today be worth more than the gaming segment. But Sea's management - combined with Garena's ability to fund new segments and drive their viral adoption - made it happen. It's certainly not guaranteed that Sea will have the same success with FinTech, but there is precedent for it.</p>\n<p>If one day this segment is worth a third or more of Sea (in 2020, FinTech accounted for 36% of MercadoLibre's revenue) then getting it for just 7% of the business today will be well worth it, even if that implies a somewhat high 16x P/S multiple for the segment today. Actually, this multiple is already lower than Visa's,&nbsp;Mastercard's (NYSE:MA), and Affirm's (NASDAQ:AFRM). Realistically, a segment growing at 818% year over year should probably get a higher multiple than these slower-growing companies', but we don't even need to speculate about what a fair multiple is, since we can reach Sea's current valuation by using 16x P/S in my model valuation.</p>\n<p>One way this segment could grow even more is through the introduction of more products besides the mobile wallet. Sea noted in their recent earnings that they have started \"early initiatives in other digital financial services such as buy now pay later, digital bank, and insurtech.\" These guys sure know how to hop on the latest high growth trend.</p>\n<p>Finally, there's the investments arm. Sea is investing in early-stage tech companies, especially in Southeast Asia. There's strong precedent for companies like Tencent (which is itself an investor in Sea) and Shopify (NYSE:SHOP) managing successful investment portfolios that ultimately factor meaningfully into their valuation. Right now Sea's investment arm is very early stage, so I don't include it in my valuation model. But it doesn't have to be factored in to justify the current share price. It's just one more area that might be worth a large part of Sea one day.</p>\n<p><b>Conclusion</b></p>\n<p>Looking at each of Sea's segments, my valuation model indicates that Sea is fairly valued today. However, my model doesn't account for the significant optionality of the newer segments. Just like e-commerce did over the last five years, FinTech (and/or investments) could grow to become a very large part of Sea's business. With the FinTech segment currently growing at 818% year over year, it doesn't take much imagination to see how this happens. Just another year or two of growth at something close to that rate will make the FinTech arm impossible for investors to ignore.</p>\n<p>This optionality combined general strength in each business has allowed Sea to post an average revenue beat of 7% over the past year. Earnings haven't been as strong, and I expect that to be the main point of contention with my valuation model, as is the case for most unprofitable companies. In particular, I expect some readers will disagree with my valuation of the e-commerce segment. But even if you drop e-commerce all the way down to 5x P/S (a multiple seen today by much slower growing e-commerce companies) that implies 54% downside from today's prices. It's a steep drop for sure, but most companies in today's market would be looking at such a decline if one were to use the most conservative valuation standards possible.</p>\n<p>Only fast-growing companies like Sea can quickly offset such a decline with revenue growth. As a result, the businesses with the most long-term potential will hardly ever trade at the most conservative valuation possible. And Sea certainly has long-term potential. I'd already done an in-depth analysis of my other nine picks in other Seeking Alpha articles, so I thought it would be good to close out the year with an article about Sea.\nFurthermore, with shares down significantly over the past couple of months (but still slightly up for the year), I believe this article may prove timely. I don't speculate on short-term market movements, but I personally added to my Sea shares recently. It's one of my only losing positions that I didn't sell out of temporarily for tax-loss harvesting, and in this article, I will explain why Sea is such a high conviction holding for me.\nIt's also worth noting that many professional investors seem to share this opinion. Sea is the 121st largest company in the world, but it's the16thmost popular holding among hedge funds. This implies that big money is overweight Sea, with 71% of shares held by institutions.\nBecause Sea operates in many different areas, I will do a separate analysis of each of its operating segments to justify its current valuation and explain how that valuation could drive unexpectedly strong returns for years.\nGaming\nSea Limited's gaming segment Garena is best known for Free Fire, a mobile battle royale game that was developed in-house.\nThe game was released in 2017 and has been very popular ever since. It currently has the second most monthly active users among all Android games globally. The game is available worldwide, but it's particularly popular in emerging markets like SEA, LATAM, and India, where it's been the highest-grossing mobile game for over two years.\nWith the game having been popular for a long time already, there's some concern that gamers will move on to the next big thing. Although there are some mobile games that are older than Free Fire and still very popular - like Roblox, Clash of Clans, and Pokemon Go - there are many more that have been forgotten. Until Garena releases more games and proves that it can be successful with them too, there will always be questions about whether its studio is a one-hit wonder.\nRegardless, Garena is a critical part of Sea because it's the only profitable segment and it doubles a social platform that provides free advertising for Sea's non-gaming products. Cross-promotion is a huge competitive advantage for Sea.\nThus, one reason for Sea's recent selloff could be the Q4 guidance implied for Garena.\nSource: Earnings Call Presentation\nIn Q2 this year, Garena raised its guidance to $4.5B-$4.7B for 2021 bookings (up from $4.3B-$4.5B). With the first three quarters already totaling $3.5B, this implies that Q4 bookings will come in at $1.0B-$1.2B, up between 0% and 20% year over year, and likely down sequentially. This is compared to 29% growth in the most recent quarter and 44% projected growth for the full year.\nWhile 20% isn't a terrible deceleration, 0% certainly is. Even 20% growth isn't spectacular compared to the historic levels. At the 10% midpoint, Garena's growth looks more similar to that of a mature company like Activision (NASDAQ:ATVI) or Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA) than a fast-growing company like Roblox (NYSE:RBLX).\nGarena's implied valuation should - and did - suffer as a result. While a fast-growing company like Roblox can command a high double-digit P/S multiple, Activision and Zynga trade at an average P/S multiple of just 4. Garena is slightly more profitable than them and probably has more risk to the upside, so I'll use a P/S multiple of 5 for my implied valuation. This implies a P/E of about 10 for a business growing at around 10%, which is very reasonable in today's market.\nThis means Garena is worth $23.5B based on the high end of management's guidance.\nI believe this valuation is actually conservative for a few reasons:\n\nNext year has tough comps and growth could re-accelerate in the following years or even next year, especially if Garena releases a new hit game. The growth rate past next quarter is not based on explicit guidance from the company, only industry forecasts.\nThe peer valuations I used are from companies also trading at the lower end of their valuation range for the past year.\nGarena has a good track record and is continuing to invest in Free Fire. One example of this is the recently released Free Fire MAX, which improves the experience for users with higher-end phones and even adds a metaverse-like customizable map called Craftland. To me, this implies that Garena believes Free Fire is still in the earlier part of its lifecycle.\nAlthough I'd obviously prefer that Garena develops more games in house, in the meantime it's still not a one-trick pony. In addition to Free Fire, Garena distributes games from third-party developers like Tencent (OTCMKTS:OTCPK:TCEHY). These are popular titles like League of Legends and Call of Duty, which meaningfully diversify Garena's revenue.\n\nE-Commerce\nSea's e-commerce platform Shopee is currently its big growth driver. This platform is often considered the Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) of Southeast Asia, and it recently expanded into more markets including Brazil.\nThere's always some debate about who is really the Amazon of a region. Shopee certainly has competition, including from Alibaba's (NYSE:BABA) Lazada, Tokopedia in Indonesia, MercadoLibre (MELI) in Brazil, and even Amazon itself. With most of the competition being private or tucked away into a larger company, many of the competitors don't publish exact revenue numbers, which makes it difficult to measure the competition. Even Sea hasn't published explicit revenue numbers for some countries like Brazil.\nOne neutral source that can be assessed is the Alexa site rank, which as its name suggests ranks sites by their popularity. Keep in mind that these are ranks, so a lower score is better.\nSource: The Author, compiled from Alexa\nShopee is very mobile-focused, but the above table only considers the website. To check App Store app ranks for the shopping category, we can use App Annie.\nSource: The Author, compiled from AppAnnie\nOn the mobile side, there's no need to look at the competition because Shopee is consistently the number one shopping app in every country listed. In a mobile-first world, this bodes very well. Even on the web side, Shopee wins out except in a few specific regions like LATAM and (barely) Indonesia, which have more local competitors.\nOf course, traffic doesn't always translate to GMV. But for a shopping app where most people will use the app to buy something, it's a decent proxy. A third party estimates that Shopee accounts for57%of all e-commerce in Southeast Asia. It's Shopee's dominance in the mobile app ranks and market share that make me consider it the Amazon of Southeast Asia.\nSo why would a company with so much potential sell off?\nAfter the recent earnings report, some analysts expressed concern that Shopee is branching out into other countries like Poland and Mexico before validating its business model in the current markets. In these countries, Shopee has less of a presence; it's bounced between the 3-5 spots on the Mexico App Store for shopping apps, and between spots 1 and 3 in Poland. Although analysts hate uncertainty - and the CEO's comments that they don't have a concrete measure of success in these earlier stage countries won't help with that - Shopee has a history of entering new countries successfully and I am willing to give management some time to try expanding more. After all, if they're successful, then it could drive even more unexpected growth in the future.\nAnother complaint from analysts was that the basket size (average purchase size) is trending down. While that could also have contributed to the recent selloff, it's hard to complain when the overall sales increased a lot despite a decrease in basket size.\nThe company raised its guidance for e-commerce again in Q3, now guiding for $5.0B-$5.2B in 2021 e-commerce revenue. That's 75%-100% growth in Q4 and about 135% growth for the year. These are much more exciting numbers than the gaming side, although the guidance still implies a slight deceleration in Q4. But compared to Amazon's $340B in 2020 e-commerce sales, Shopee looks like it's just scratched the surface. E-commerce is at only11%penetration in Southeast Asia compared to18.7%in the USA, and Southeast Asia economies are generally growing faster than the USA's.\nDespite being in a blue skies industry, it's more difficult to value the e-commerce segment because it operates at a loss (whereas the gaming segment is highly profitable). Shopee's success is not guaranteed because it's not clear at this point whether the platform can become profitable while retaining its market share. Stocks like this tend to experience more volatility, which could partially explain the recent selloff.\nFor unprofitable software companies, I like to use the Rule of 40 to assess the business. But it's difficult to apply this rule to a more cyclical e-commerce company with naturally lower margins. Even so, it's worth noting that despite being unprofitable, Sea's Rule of 40 score of 104 is better than most SaaS companies', and also better than e-commerce peers Amazon (21), MercadoLibre (73), and Alibaba (43).\nTo understand Shopee's terminal valuation once it becomes profitable, we can look at industry peers. Amazon is one profitable and slower-growing peer, and it trades at 4x P/S. AWS pushes this number up, but Amazon's high exposure to first-party sales offsets that. Other e-commerce marketplace peers trade at similar valuations: Alibaba at 3x P/S, MercadoLibre at 9x P/S. All of these valuations are basically all-time lows.\nIf Shopee keeps doubling revenue over the next couple of years (which it's easily done every year since 2016), becomes profitable (which scaling up tends to help with), and will have Amazon's P/S multiple in two years, then at 16 P/S today it would trade flat for two years. But if it keeps growing much faster than Amazon over a longer period like a decade, and/or if the overall industry multiples expand to more normal historical levels, then even at 16x P/S this segment has potential upside. On the other hand, if it stops growing or never becomes profitable then investors will be very disappointed at any P/S.\nGiven this wide range of outcomes, each person is going to have their own way of valuing this segment. For me, when I look at Shopee's mobile dominance, relatively small current size, the funding coming in from Garena, and the precedent set by Amazon, Alibaba, and MercadoLibre for the sustainable long-term success of this business model, I am optimistic about this segment's future. I recognize that it's currently an unprofitable and thus risky segment, but I also see the massive potential.\nSo I am happy paying a 16x P/S multiple, which values the e-commerce segment at $83.2B. Some people will call that way too high, and those people will probably never get a chance to invest in this company, for better or for worse.\nThus, with just Garena and Shopee, I have Sea being worth $106.7B. Its current market cap is $123.1B. To account for the difference, let's look at the other parts of Sea.\nFinTech & Investments\nThe easiest addition to my computed valuation is Sea's $12B cash pile, partially offset by $4B in debt. This adds some nice optionality to the company and ensures that it won't be bankrupt any time soon despite losing money with Shopee. Adding in the $8B cash difference puts my computed valuation at $114.7B, just $8.4B short of the actual valuation.\nThen there is Sea's FinTech arm, SeaMoney. The main product here is a mobile wallet, which was responsible for $4.6B in payment volume in the last quarter (~$20B over a year). This segment accounted for $132 million in Q3 revenue, up a whopping 818% year over year. This implies a \"take rate\" of 2.9%, which is even better than established FinTech companies like Visa (V). Because of this high take rate, I'm not worried about SeaMoney losing money while it scales.\nDespite SeaMoney being a small segment, it's now reaching a point where it can be factored into the valuation. Maybe it's only worth a couple of billion, but this is just the start. Five years ago, nobody would have expected that an e-commerce platform accounting for 5% of Sea's sales would today be worth more than the gaming segment. But Sea's management - combined with Garena's ability to fund new segments and drive their viral adoption - made it happen. It's certainly not guaranteed that Sea will have the same success with FinTech, but there is precedent for it.\nIf one day this segment is worth a third or more of Sea (in 2020, FinTech accounted for 36% of MercadoLibre's revenue) then getting it for just 7% of the business today will be well worth it, even if that implies a somewhat high 16x P/S multiple for the segment today. Actually, this multiple is already lower than Visa's, Mastercard's (NYSE:MA), and Affirm's (NASDAQ:AFRM). Realistically, a segment growing at 818% year over year should probably get a higher multiple than these slower-growing companies', but we don't even need to speculate about what a fair multiple is, since we can reach Sea's current valuation by using 16x P/S in my model valuation.\nOne way this segment could grow even more is through the introduction of more products besides the mobile wallet. Sea noted in their recent earnings that they have started \"early initiatives in other digital financial services such as buy now pay later, digital bank, and insurtech.\" These guys sure know how to hop on the latest high growth trend.\nFinally, there's the investments arm. Sea is investing in early-stage tech companies, especially in Southeast Asia. There's strong precedent for companies like Tencent (which is itself an investor in Sea) and Shopify (NYSE:SHOP) managing successful investment portfolios that ultimately factor meaningfully into their valuation. Right now Sea's investment arm is very early stage, so I don't include it in my valuation model. But it doesn't have to be factored in to justify the current share price. It's just one more area that might be worth a large part of Sea one day.\nConclusion\nLooking at each of Sea's segments, my valuation model indicates that Sea is fairly valued today. However, my model doesn't account for the significant optionality of the newer segments. Just like e-commerce did over the last five years, FinTech (and/or investments) could grow to become a very large part of Sea's business. With the FinTech segment currently growing at 818% year over year, it doesn't take much imagination to see how this happens. Just another year or two of growth at something close to that rate will make the FinTech arm impossible for investors to ignore.\nThis optionality combined general strength in each business has allowed Sea to post an average revenue beat of 7% over the past year. Earnings haven't been as strong, and I expect that to be the main point of contention with my valuation model, as is the case for most unprofitable companies. In particular, I expect some readers will disagree with my valuation of the e-commerce segment. But even if you drop e-commerce all the way down to 5x P/S (a multiple seen today by much slower growing e-commerce companies) that implies 54% downside from today's prices. It's a steep drop for sure, but most companies in today's market would be looking at such a decline if one were to use the most conservative valuation standards possible.\nOnly fast-growing companies like Sea can quickly offset such a decline with revenue growth. As a result, the businesses with the most long-term potential will hardly ever trade at the most conservative valuation possible. And Sea certainly has long-term potential. That's a massive tailwind for solar manufacturers who can make product profitably, and no <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> has as long a history of profitable manufacturing as First Solar.</p>\n<p>You can see below that First Solar is solidly profitable and has over $1 billion in cash on the balance sheet. And with demand up and supply tight in the solar market we should see strong economics given First Solar's integrated manufacturing and thin-film technology that isn't reliant on typical industry silicon supply chains.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/37846107aae8b4cd066a1fef25334668\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>FSLR Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>What makes this a great growth stock is the company's plans to double production over the next three years. We should see improved economies of scale and better net margins overall as manufacturing expands. Management expects $4 to $4.60 per share in earnings this year, which at the midpoint puts the stock at a price-to-2021-earnings ratio of 20. Given the growth expected over the next three years, this could be a breakout stock in alternative energy.</p>\n<h2>Branching out while still in growth mode</h2>\n<p><b>Howard Smith (Enphase Energy):</b> Residential and commercial solar system technology company Enphase Energy fits into the growth stock category by several measures. The more than $350 million in revenue in its recently reported third quarter was 250% above its sales from just three years ago. And that growth hasn't plateaued yet. The midpoint of its fourth-quarter revenue guidance range would represent an increase of over 50% year over year.</p>\n<p>Enphase also isn't sitting on its laurels. The company looks to be hitting its stride at the same time the solar industry is gaining tailwinds from both public and private investment. Until recently, Enphase's growth has been tied to selling its microinverters and associated system software and communication technology. Microinverters convert the DC power generated by solar panels into the AC power used in homes and businesses. Enphase has recently introduced the IQ8, its eighth-generation system.</p>\n<p>But the company has also moved into battery storage systems, and is expanding those sales globally. Most recently, Enphase announced it is acquiring electric vehicle charging solutions company ClipperCreek. That makes sense as EV buyers, as well as businesses supporting sustainability solutions, want those vehicles to be charged using 100% renewable energy. The company also plans to integrate its new charging technology to provide the capability for \"vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid applications.\"</p>\n<p>Even with the expectation of strong revenue growth in the fourth quarter, it will take some time for Enphase to grow into its valuation. Its current price-to-earnings ratio is above 180. But as long as its pace of growth continues, it will justify its recent price. With the company branching into the EV charging space, it might even do it sooner than some investors think, making Enphase a quality growth name for investors looking at the alternative energy sector.</p>\n<h2>A great blend of value, income, and growth</h2>\n<p><b>Daniel Foelber (Brookfield Renewable Corporation):</b> Share prices of Brookfield Renewable are hovering around a 52-week low despite massive gains in the energy sector and the <b>S&amp;P 500</b>. However, renewable energy investors know that it hasn't exactly been a great year for solar and wind energy stocks. In fact, both the <b>Invesco Solar ETF</b>&nbsp;and the <b>First Trust Global Wind Energy ETF</b>&nbsp;are negative for the year. However, it's worth mentioning that the average stock in the Invesco Solar ETF returned 14 times more than the market in 2020.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5d184ccbf4b67fc00483dd2d500d85e2\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"533\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>BEPC Total Return Level data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>In Brookfield's case, the company has suffered a few analyst downgrades and faces skepticism over whether or not it can grow its earnings and dividend at the rate it previously guided for. Brookfield increased its dividend by just 5% in 2021 and is due for an increase next quarter. That's at the low end of management's target range of 5% to 9% a year. Yet because Brookfield's stock price has fallen, it now yields an impressive 3.5%. What's more, Brookfield reiterated its goal to drive shareholder value with a total annual return of 12% to 15% for investors over the long term. Brookfield is able to make this impressive commitment due to its top-tier portfolio of renewable energy assets, which consists of a global development backlog of 36 gigawatts (GW) and an existing capacity of 20 GW. All told, Brookfield's business is doing well and is set up nicely for growth and income.</p>\n<p>For investors who don't want to bother with hyper-growth stocks like Lucid and Rivian, Brookfield Renewable could just be the ideal antidote for an electric vehicle euphoria migraine.</p>\n<h2>Opportunities abound</h2>\n<p>Not all alternative energy stocks have wild valuations today. The good news is you can now scoop up shares at near bargain-basement levels.</p>\n<p>Walgreens Boots Alliance is the midst of a&nbsp;multipoint turnaround strategyaimed at boosting margins and lifting its organic growth potential. The company has already achieved more than $2 billion in annual cost cuts a full year ahead of schedule, and it's investing heavily in digitization. Though brick-and-mortar pharmacy chains remain reliant on foot traffic, investing in direct-to-consumer sales is an easy way to lift sales.</p>\n<p>The company has also partnered with (and invested in) VillageMD to&nbsp;open co-located health clinics. But if we zoom out and focus on the bigger picture, Etsy is doing just fine.</p>\n<p>The platform generated $3.1 billion in gross merchandise sales (GMS) in the third quarter, up 17.9% over the year-ago period. This was all the more impressive given that a year ago GMS shot up 119%. The ecosystem is robust and growing with 96 million active buyers and 7.5 million active sellers, both of which are up substantially on a sequential basis.</p>\n<p>Over the past 12 months, Etsy's profit margin was a superb 21.6%. And the&nbsp;business is a cash cow, producing $584&nbsp;million in free cash flow during that time. That leaves lots of room to potentially buy back stock, further boosting earnings per share.</p>\n<p>The stock has been a massive outperformer, skyrocketing nearly 1,600%&nbsp;over the past five years. But don't think the party is over for this&nbsp;booming&nbsp;e-commerce&nbsp;business. CEO Josh Silverman has ambitions to create a \"House of Brands\" that will penetrate what the leadership team believes is a $1.7&nbsp;trillion global opportunity. The recent acquisitions of Depop, a secondhand-fashion reseller, and Elo7, known as the Etsy of Brazil, should help support that&nbsp;vision of growth for the company in the decade ahead.</p>\n<p><b>2. The Joint Corp.</b></p>\n<p>Who knew that offering fast and&nbsp;affordable back adjustments would be such a&nbsp;lucrative&nbsp;business model? That's exactly what&nbsp;<b>The Joint Corp.</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:JYNT)is doing. The nationwide franchisor and operator of&nbsp;666&nbsp;chiropractic clinics has been growing at a breathtaking pace. A decade ago, the company had just 26 locations.</p>\n<p>After reaching an all-time high of $107.30 in early September, the stock has crashed over 40%. Even so, the price is up 135% year to date. This company does away with the traditional, insurance-based structure by letting patients walk in (no appointment needed) and receive quick and effective treatment from a licensed chiropractor. At $29, a visit here is often lower than co-pays at independent chiropractor offices.</p>\n<p>The model is working. Same-store sales for locations open at least four years jumped 21%&nbsp;in the latest quarter. And with annual spending on back pain in the U.S. estimated to be $134 billion, there is a massive market opportunity. The Joint's trailing-12-month revenue totaled $75 million.</p>\n<p>Management is confident the company can one day have 1,800 locations in the U.S., almost triple its current footprint. With 295 clinics in active development and 132 franchise licenses sold in the first nine months of 2021, The Joint is well on its way to bringing chiropractic care to the masses.</p>\n<p><b>3. Roku</b></p>\n<p>Perhaps the biggest shocker on this list is&nbsp;<b>Roku</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:ROKU), which has seen its stock&nbsp;shed roughly half of its value&nbsp;since July. Some challenges, including missing Wall Street's sales estimates in the third quarter plus supply-chain bottlenecks, are certainly pressuring the stock. A decade ago, the company had just 26 locations.\nAfter reaching an all-time high of $107.30 in early September, the stock has crashed over 40%. Even so, the price is up 135% year to date. This company does away with the traditional, insurance-based structure by letting patients walk in (no appointment needed) and receive quick and effective treatment from a licensed chiropractor. At $29, a visit here is often lower than co-pays at independent chiropractor offices.\nThe model is working. Same-store sales for locations open at least four years jumped 21% in the latest quarter. That's got bulls cheering the stock’s recent run.</p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Tesla stock hit its lowest level since Oct. 22 and was&nbsp;down 27% from the highs.</p>\n<p>However, shares reversed off that low, climbing more than $50 a share by the close.</p>\n<p>That rally is extending itself Wednesday, with Tesla stock up more than 13% from yesterday’s low.</p>\n<p>Tesla stock&nbsp;was in focus this morning&nbsp;ahead of the open, rallying several percent on the hope that CEO Elon Musk would be done selling his shares.</p>\n<p>Musk said that&nbsp;he’s “sold enough” to meet&nbsp;his prior pledge. Earlier this week, Musk said he will pay&nbsp;more than $11 billion in taxes this year.</p>\n<p>If Musk really is done selling the stock — and he should be — then that big headwind will be out of the way and we may see it rebound higher. Now that it’s back above $1,000, we have to wonder if Tesla can climb to new highs.</p>\n<p><b>Trading Tesla Stock</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e32b497a2bbfdad887112e45eeb92adb\" tg-width=\"1139\" tg-height=\"866\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Daily chart of Tesla stock.</span></p>\n<p>The stock traded down into the $910 gap-fill level and prior all-time high at $900, and found its footing.</p>\n<p>If we get specific, the 21-week moving average and the 200-unit moving average on the four-hour chart were also nearby.</p>\n<p>In any regard, Tesla shares are ripping higher now, trading up through the 10-day moving average and hovering around the key $1,000 level, which has been a key pivot since late October.</p>\n<p>If it can maintain above $1,000, the next obvious area comes into play near $1,025 to $1,035. There Tesla stock finds its 21-day and 50-day moving averages.</p>\n<p>That should be an area to take a pause, but if Tesla is able to push through this zone, then the $1,100 level and downtrend resistance (blue line) are in play.</p>\n<p>On the downside, let’s see if shares struggle with $1,000. Here's how the charts are setting up now.\nTesla shares are rallying higher on Wednesday, up 7.5% and climbing back above $1,000 a share. That's got bulls cheering the stock’s recent run.\nOn Tuesday, Tesla stock hit its lowest level since Oct. 22 and was down 27% from the highs.\nHowever, shares reversed off that low, climbing more than $50 a share by the close.\nThat rally is extending itself Wednesday, with Tesla stock up more than 13% from yesterday’s low.\nTesla stock was in focus this morning ahead of the open, rallying several percent on the hope that CEO Elon Musk would be done selling his shares.\nMusk said that he’s “sold enough” to meet his prior pledge. Earlier this week, Musk said he will pay more than $11 billion in taxes this year.\nIf Musk really is done selling the stock — and he should be — then that big headwind will be out of the way and we may see it rebound higher. Now that it’s back above $1,000, we have to wonder if Tesla can climb to new highs.\nTrading Tesla Stock\nDaily chart of Tesla stock.\nThe stock traded down into the $910 gap-fill level and prior all-time high at $900, and found its footing.\nIf we get specific, the 21-week moving average and the 200-unit moving average on the four-hour chart were also nearby.\nIn any regard, Tesla shares are ripping higher now, trading up through the 10-day moving average and hovering around the key $1,000 level, which has been a key pivot since late October.\nIf it can maintain above $1,000, the next obvious area comes into play near $1,025 to $1,035. There Tesla stock finds its 21-day and 50-day moving averages.\nThat should be an area to take a pause, but if Tesla is able to push through this zone, then the $1,100 level and downtrend resistance (blue line) are in play.\nOn the downside, let’s see if shares struggle with $1,000. That's a massive tailwind for solar manufacturers who can make product profitably, and no <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> has as long a history of profitable manufacturing as First Solar.</p>\n<p>You can see below that First Solar is solidly profitable and has over $1 billion in cash on the balance sheet. And with demand up and supply tight in the solar market we should see strong economics given First Solar's integrated manufacturing and thin-film technology that isn't reliant on typical industry silicon supply chains.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/37846107aae8b4cd066a1fef25334668\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>FSLR Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>What makes this a great growth stock is the company's plans to double production over the next three years. We should see improved economies of scale and better net margins overall as manufacturing expands. Management expects $4 to $4.60 per share in earnings this year, which at the midpoint puts the stock at a price-to-2021-earnings ratio of 20. Given the growth expected over the next three years, this could be a breakout stock in alternative energy.</p>\n<h2>Branching out while still in growth mode</h2>\n<p><b>Howard Smith (Enphase Energy):</b> Residential and commercial solar system technology company Enphase Energy fits into the growth stock category by several measures. The more than $350 million in revenue in its recently reported third quarter was 250% above its sales from just three years ago. And that growth hasn't plateaued yet. The midpoint of its fourth-quarter revenue guidance range would represent an increase of over 50% year over year.</p>\n<p>Enphase also isn't sitting on its laurels. The company looks to be hitting its stride at the same time the solar industry is gaining tailwinds from both public and private investment. Until recently, Enphase's growth has been tied to selling its microinverters and associated system software and communication technology. Microinverters convert the DC power generated by solar panels into the AC power used in homes and businesses. Enphase has recently introduced the IQ8, its eighth-generation system.</p>\n<p>But the company has also moved into battery storage systems, and is expanding those sales globally. Most recently, Enphase announced it is acquiring electric vehicle charging solutions company ClipperCreek. That makes sense as EV buyers, as well as businesses supporting sustainability solutions, want those vehicles to be charged using 100% renewable energy. The company also plans to integrate its new charging technology to provide the capability for \"vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid applications.\"</p>\n<p>Even with the expectation of strong revenue growth in the fourth quarter, it will take some time for Enphase to grow into its valuation. Its current price-to-earnings ratio is above 180. But as long as its pace of growth continues, it will justify its recent price. With the company branching into the EV charging space, it might even do it sooner than some investors think, making Enphase a quality growth name for investors looking at the alternative energy sector.</p>\n<h2>A great blend of value, income, and growth</h2>\n<p><b>Daniel Foelber (Brookfield Renewable Corporation):</b> Share prices of Brookfield Renewable are hovering around a 52-week low despite massive gains in the energy sector and the <b>S&amp;P 500</b>. However, renewable energy investors know that it hasn't exactly been a great year for solar and wind energy stocks. In fact, both the <b>Invesco Solar ETF</b>&nbsp;and the <b>First Trust Global Wind Energy ETF</b>&nbsp;are negative for the year. However, it's worth mentioning that the average stock in the Invesco Solar ETF returned 14 times more than the market in 2020.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5d184ccbf4b67fc00483dd2d500d85e2\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"533\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>BEPC Total Return Level data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>In Brookfield's case, the company has suffered a few analyst downgrades and faces skepticism over whether or not it can grow its earnings and dividend at the rate it previously guided for. Brookfield increased its dividend by just 5% in 2021 and is due for an increase next quarter. That's at the low end of management's target range of 5% to 9% a year. Yet because Brookfield's stock price has fallen, it now yields an impressive 3.5%. What's more, Brookfield reiterated its goal to drive shareholder value with a total annual return of 12% to 15% for investors over the long term. Brookfield is able to make this impressive commitment due to its top-tier portfolio of renewable energy assets, which consists of a global development backlog of 36 gigawatts (GW) and an existing capacity of 20 GW. All told, Brookfield's business is doing well and is set up nicely for growth and income.</p>\n<p>For investors who don't want to bother with hyper-growth stocks like Lucid and Rivian, Brookfield Renewable could just be the ideal antidote for an electric vehicle euphoria migraine.</p>\n<h2>Opportunities abound</h2>\n<p>Not all alternative energy stocks have wild valuations today. Earlier this week, Musk said he will pay&nbsp;more than $11 billion in taxes this year.</p>\n<p>If Musk really is done selling the stock — and he should be — then that big headwind will be out of the way and we may see it rebound higher. Now that it’s back above $1,000, we have to wonder if Tesla can climb to new highs.</p>\n<p><b>Trading Tesla Stock</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e32b497a2bbfdad887112e45eeb92adb\" tg-width=\"1139\" tg-height=\"866\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Daily chart of Tesla stock.</span></p>\n<p>The stock traded down into the $910 gap-fill level and prior all-time high at $900, and found its footing.</p>\n<p>If we get specific, the 21-week moving average and the 200-unit moving average on the four-hour chart were also nearby.</p>\n<p>In any regard, Tesla shares are ripping higher now, trading up through the 10-day moving average and hovering around the key $1,000 level, which has been a key pivot since late October.</p>\n<p>If it can maintain above $1,000, the next obvious area comes into play near $1,025 to $1,035. There Tesla stock finds its 21-day and 50-day moving averages.</p>\n<p>That should be an area to take a pause, but if Tesla is able to push through this zone, then the $1,100 level and downtrend resistance (blue line) are in play.</p>\n<p>On the downside, let’s see if shares struggle with $1,000. Within the&nbsp;cybersecurity space, there's no company firing on all cylinders quite like&nbsp;<b>CrowdStrike Holdings</b>(NASDAQ:CRWD).</p>\n<p>The not-so-subtle secret to CrowdStrike's success is the company's cloud-native platform known as Falcon. Since it was built in the cloud and relies on artificial intelligence to grow smarter and more efficient at detecting and responding to threats over time, Falcon can actually be a more cost-efficient solution over the long run, even though it initially costs more than its competitors. CrowdStrike notes that Falcon oversees about 1 trillion events each day.</p>\n<p>CrowdStrike's ramp up&nbsp;has been nothing short of incredible. In under five years we've seen the company's subscriber base balloon from 450 to nearly 14,700. Additionally, the number of clients with four or more cloud-module subscriptions has catapulted from less than 10% to 68% over the same stretch. Because margins are so high with cybersecurity service subscriptions, CrowdStrike has been blowing the door off Wall Street's growth expectations, yet it's already achieved its long-term gross margin target of 77% to 82%+.</p>\n<p>Cybersecurity is arguably the safest fast-growing trend of the decade, making CrowdStrike the type of company that could make a splash in your portfolio.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/74173fae42470420d52dba62b667f224\" tg-width=\"2000\" tg-height=\"1333\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.</span></p>\n<p><b>Annaly Capital Management</b></p>\n<p>In a market that only seems to care about&nbsp;growth stocks, one way investors can begin 2022 with a bang is by scooping up a cheap (trading below book value)&nbsp;ultra-high-yield dividend stock&nbsp;that can put inflation in its place. Say hello to&nbsp;<b>Annaly Capital Management</b>(NYSE:NLY)&nbsp;and its 10.7% dividend yield.</p>\n<p>Annaly Capital is a mortgage real estate investment trust (REIT). This might sound complicated, but the operating model is pretty straightforward. Annaly aims to borrow money at lower short-term rates, and uses this capital to acquire higher-yielding long-term assets, such as mortgage-backed securities (MBS). The goal is to maximize the gap between the average yield from MBSs minus the average borrowing rate, which is known as net interest margin.</p>\n<p>Annaly has two things working in its favor. First, it&nbsp;almost exclusively buys agency assets. These are securities backed by the federal government in the event of default. Though this added protection often means lower yields for the MBSs it buys, it also allows the company to safely utilize leverage to its advantage.</p>\n<p>Second, Annaly is in the sweet spot of its growth cycle. The early stages of an economic recovery usually features a steepening Treasury bond yield curve. But among the volatility sits one high-growth name investors can trust: online retailer&nbsp;<b>JD.com</b>(NASDAQ:JD).</p>\n<p>There are two ways that online marketplaces usually operate. The first model involves operating a third-party seller. An example would&nbsp;<b>Alibaba</b>&nbsp;allowing sellers to use its platform to move goods. The second method, which is deployed by JD.com, is to control the inventory and logistics while relying only minimally on third-party marketplaces. </p>\n<p>As of the end of September, JD had more than 552 million annual active customers shopping on its marketplace, which was up almost 111 million customers from the previous rolling 12-month stretch.&nbsp; Keep in mind that China's gross domestic product growth rate consistently outpaces most developed countries. This makes e-commerce a particularly intriguing opportunity in China.</p>\n<p>Additionally, don't overlook&nbsp;JD's push into new verticals, such as cloud services, advertising, and healthcare. Although these verticals represent a small portion of net sales, services grew by 43% in Q3 2021 from the previous year.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fac4401106e9e2a88e9a38658c2fcd10\" tg-width=\"2000\" tg-height=\"1333\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.</span></p>\n<p><b>Walgreens Boots Alliance</b></p>\n<p>Another value and income stock that would be perfect for long-term investors to buy with $1,000 is pharmacy chain&nbsp;<b>Walgreens Boots Alliance</b>(NASDAQ:WBA).</p>\n<p>Healthcare stocks&nbsp;are normally (pardon the pun) immune to the ebbs and flows of the stock market and U.S. economy. No matter how good or bad things are, people always need drugs, devices, and healthcare services. But foot-traffic dependent pharmacy chains like Walgreens were punched in the gut by the pandemic. The good news is you can now scoop up shares at near bargain-basement levels.</p>\n<p>Walgreens Boots Alliance is the midst of a&nbsp;multipoint turnaround strategyaimed at boosting margins and lifting its organic growth potential. The company has already achieved more than $2 billion in annual cost cuts a full year ahead of schedule, and it's investing heavily in digitization. Though brick-and-mortar pharmacy chains remain reliant on foot traffic, investing in direct-to-consumer sales is an easy way to lift sales.</p>\n<p>The company has also partnered with (and invested in) VillageMD to&nbsp;open co-located health clinics. What differentiates the Walgreens/VillageMD clinics from competitors is that they'll be physician-staffed and full service. These clinics shouldn't have any trouble attracting repeat patients that can be funneled directly to Walgreens' higher-margin pharmacy.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f67080bb4dbe247432cd36d0e19766c9\" tg-width=\"2000\" tg-height=\"1333\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>IMAGE SOURCE: META PLATFORMS.</span></p>\n<p><b>Meta Platforms</b></p>\n<p>A fifth and final stock that you can buy with $1,000 to start 2022 off with a bang is&nbsp;<b>Meta Platforms</b>(NASDAQ:FB), the parent company of social media giant Facebook.</p>\n<p>Although Meta may have changed its name two months ago, make no mistake that the vast majority of the company's revenue still originates from advertising on Facebook. When the September quarter ended, Facebook had 2.91 billion monthly active users (MAUs) visiting its site, with another 670 million unique MAUs heading to Instagram and/or WhatsApp.&nbsp; This combined&nbsp;3.58 billion MAUs&nbsp;represents more than half of the global adult population. It's no wonder Meta's ad-pricing power is higher than just about any company on the planet.</p>\n<p>As I've previously noted, Meta hasn't even depressed the gas pedal all the way, either. It'll generate more than $100 billion in ad revenue in 2021, yet almost all of this will come from Facebook and Instagram. If and when the company decides to meaningfully monetize Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, we should see another sizable bump in sales, profits, and cash flow.</p>\n<p>Meta is also the premier play on the metaverse -- i.e., the next iteration of the internet that allows people to interact in 3D virtual environments. This might sound complicated, but the operating model is pretty straightforward. No matter how good or bad things are, people always need drugs, devices, and healthcare services. But foot-traffic dependent pharmacy chains like Walgreens were punched in the gut by the pandemic. The good news is you can now scoop up shares at near bargain-basement levels.\nWalgreens Boots Alliance is the midst of a multipoint turnaround strategyaimed at boosting margins and lifting its organic growth potential. The company has already achieved more than $2 billion in annual cost cuts a full year ahead of schedule, and it's investing heavily in digitization. Though brick-and-mortar pharmacy chains remain reliant on foot traffic, investing in direct-to-consumer sales is an easy way to lift sales.\nThe company has also partnered with (and invested in) VillageMD to open co-located health clinics. What differentiates the Walgreens/VillageMD clinics from competitors is that they'll be physician-staffed and full service. These clinics shouldn't have any trouble attracting repeat patients that can be funneled directly to Walgreens' higher-margin pharmacy.\nIMAGE SOURCE: META PLATFORMS.\nMeta Platforms\nA fifth and final stock that you can buy with $1,000 to start 2022 off with a bang is Meta Platforms(NASDAQ:FB), the parent company of social media giant Facebook.\nAlthough Meta may have changed its name two months ago, make no mistake that the vast majority of the company's revenue still originates from advertising on Facebook. When the September quarter ended, Facebook had 2.91 billion monthly active users (MAUs) visiting its site, with another 670 million unique MAUs heading to Instagram and/or WhatsApp.  This combined 3.58 billion MAUs represents more than half of the global adult population. It's no wonder Meta's ad-pricing power is higher than just about any company on the planet.\nAs I've previously noted, Meta hasn't even depressed the gas pedal all the way, either. It'll generate more than $100 billion in ad revenue in 2021, yet almost all of this will come from Facebook and Instagram. If and when the company decides to meaningfully monetize Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, we should see another sizable bump in sales, profits, and cash flow.\nMeta is also the premier play on the metaverse -- i.e., the next iteration of the internet that allows people to interact in 3D virtual environments. The ecosystem is robust and growing with 96 million active buyers and 7.5 million active sellers, both of which are up substantially on a sequential basis.</p>\n<p>Over the past 12 months, Etsy's profit margin was a superb 21.6%. And the&nbsp;business is a cash cow, producing $584&nbsp;million in free cash flow during that time. That leaves lots of room to potentially buy back stock, further boosting earnings per share.</p>\n<p>The stock has been a massive outperformer, skyrocketing nearly 1,600%&nbsp;over the past five years. But don't think the party is over for this&nbsp;booming&nbsp;e-commerce&nbsp;business. CEO Josh Silverman has ambitions to create a \"House of Brands\" that will penetrate what the leadership team believes is a $1.7&nbsp;trillion global opportunity. The recent acquisitions of Depop, a secondhand-fashion reseller, and Elo7, known as the Etsy of Brazil, should help support that&nbsp;vision of growth for the company in the decade ahead.</p>\n<p><b>2. The Joint Corp.</b></p>\n<p>Who knew that offering fast and&nbsp;affordable back adjustments would be such a&nbsp;lucrative&nbsp;business model? That's exactly what&nbsp;<b>The Joint Corp.</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:JYNT)is doing. The nationwide franchisor and operator of&nbsp;666&nbsp;chiropractic clinics has been growing at a breathtaking pace. A decade ago, the company had just 26 locations.</p>\n<p>After reaching an all-time high of $107.30 in early September, the stock has crashed over 40%. Even so, the price is up 135% year to date. This company does away with the traditional, insurance-based structure by letting patients walk in (no appointment needed) and receive quick and effective treatment from a licensed chiropractor. At $29, a visit here is often lower than co-pays at independent chiropractor offices.</p>\n<p>The model is working. Same-store sales for locations open at least four years jumped 21%&nbsp;in the latest quarter. And with annual spending on back pain in the U.S. estimated to be $134 billion, there is a massive market opportunity. The Joint's trailing-12-month revenue totaled $75 million.</p>\n<p>Management is confident the company can one day have 1,800 locations in the U.S., almost triple its current footprint. With 295 clinics in active development and 132 franchise licenses sold in the first nine months of 2021, The Joint is well on its way to bringing chiropractic care to the masses.</p>\n<p><b>3. Roku</b></p>\n<p>Perhaps the biggest shocker on this list is&nbsp;<b>Roku</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:ROKU), which has seen its stock&nbsp;shed roughly half of its value&nbsp;since July. Some challenges, including missing Wall Street's sales estimates in the third quarter plus supply-chain bottlenecks, are certainly pressuring the stock. But I still firmly believe that the long-term outlook for Roku is intact.</p>\n<p>This top streaming business is attractive not because of its media sticks, which have actually been sold at a loss in the past two quarters, but because of its burgeoning platform segment. This is where high-margin advertising and subscription fees are. In the most recent quarter, the platform business represented 86%&nbsp;of total revenue, a figure that has steadily increased over time.</p>\n<p>Roku's 56.4&nbsp;million active accounts streamed 18 billion hours of content in the latest three-month period. But what really stood out was the average revenue per user of $40.10. The monster success of The Roku Channel, now a top-five channel on the platform, has further helped ad revenue. This allows even greater investment in content (including 50 new original series planned over the next two years), bringing in new viewers.</p>\n<p>The management team, led by CEO Anthony Wood, thinks that streaming is the future of video entertainment. The ongoing decline of cable-TV subscribers makes this trend undeniable.
